Job description

Benefits:
  • Competitive salary
  • Flexible schedule
  • Opportunity for advancement

We are seeking a Microsoft Excel for Accounting (Microsoft 365 Apps) Subject Matter Expert (SME) to partner with our Curriculum Development Team to create skillsbased activities aligned to the Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel for Accounting Associate (Exam MO220) certification. You will apply realworld accounting and Excel 365 expertise to design lessons, handson practice, and assessments that prepare K12 and Higher Education learners to perform routine accounting tasks in Excel and succeed on the MO220 exam.
This is a remote, projectbased contract role with the potential for ongoing work.
What you will do
  • Design objectivealigned activities: Review the course manuscript, which is already mapped to the MO220 objective domains, to determine where handson Excel activities should be placed within each lesson.
  • Create complete activity packages for each task area, including:
    • An Excel workbook (starter file and solution file) based on realistic accounting scenarios such as trial balances, income statements, balance sheets, bank reconciliations, payroll, amortization schedules, accounts receivable and accounts payable aging, and depreciation schedules.
    • Stepbystep written instructions for students on how to complete the activity in Excel 365 using descriptors rather than explicit function names, mirroring the performancebased nature of the certification exam.
    • A simple screenrecorded walkthrough of you completing the activity and explaining the accounting logic and key Excel steps (no professional editing required).
    • Clear, highquality screenshots that highlight formulas, intermediate results, and key tools used in the activity.
  • Support key accounting skill areas through the manuscript: Ensure each activity clearly supports the skills targeted in the corresponding lesson, such as:
    • Preparing accounting data for analysis (importing and exporting data, cleaning and formatting data, removing duplicates, applying data validation, transforming data with text and date functions, and using fill features).
    • Organizing transactions and preparing a trial balance (sorting and filtering transactions and using math, statistical, logical, and lookup functions).
    • Preparing and analyzing financial statements (building income statements and balance sheets with formulas, formatting for presentation, and calculating profitability, liquidity, and solvency ratios).
    • Performing routine accounting activities (creating amortization schedules, bank reconciliations, accounts receivable and accounts payable aging reports, payroll calculations, bad debt calculations, depreciation schedules, and using conditional formatting, formula auditing, pivot tables, dashboards, and charts where appropriate).
  • Focus on jobready skills: Incorporate realistic accounting workflows (for example, cleaning imported transaction data, reconciling bank statements, calculating payroll, and updating depreciation schedules) that mirror how entrylevel accounting professionals use Excel.
Required qualifications
  • Expertlevel proficiency with Microsoft Excel 365 for accounting:
    • Comfortable importing, cleaning, and transforming accounting data, including using text and date functions, data validation, and fill features.
    • Strong use of math, statistical, logical, and lookup functions to organize and summarize transaction data.
    • Experienced in building and checking income statements and balance sheets with formulas, and computing profitability, liquidity, and solvency ratios in Excel.
    • Handson experience with amortization schedules, bank reconciliations, accounts receivable and accounts payable aging, payroll, bad debt, and depreciation schedules in Excel.
    • Ability to use conditional formatting, formula auditing tools, pivot tables, dashboards, and charts to analyze and present financial information and identify anomalies.
  • Realworld accounting experience:
    • Recent, practical experience performing routine accounting tasks (for example, staff accountant, accounting clerk, bookkeeper, payroll specialist, or similar role) with Excel as a primary tool.
    • Comfortable applying accounting principles to realworld data sets, not just textbook examples.
  • Assessment and curriculum experience:
    • Experience teaching, tutoring, or developing curriculum for accounting, bookkeeping, or business courses (K12, higher education, or professional education).
    • Ability to design authentic, performancebased tasks where learners must infer the correct Excel tools from descriptive instructions rather than function names.
  • Communication and quality:
    • Excellent written communication skills for clear, studentfriendly stepbystep instructions.
    • Ability to create simple, clear screenrecorded walkthroughs and accurate screenshots.
    • High attention to detail and accuracy in formulas, accounting logic, and spreadsheet presentation.
Position details
  • Type: Contract remote
  • Compensation: $400 upon completion of the project, with potential for followon work on future Excel and accounting courses
  • Start date: As soon as a qualified SME is selected
If you are passionate about education, possess deep expertise in Microsoft Excel 365 for accounting, and are committed to helping students develop practical accounting and spreadsheet skills, we encourage you to apply.
