What is a remote entry level MERN Stack developer?

A Remote Entry Level MERN Stack Developer is a software developer who works from a remote location, usually from home, and specializes in building web applications using the MERN stack. The MERN stack includes MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, and Node.js, which are popular JavaScript-based technologies. Entry level generally indicates that the position is suitable for those just starting their careers, with minimal professional experience required. This role often involves assisting with coding, debugging, and learning best practices under the guidance of more experienced developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote entry level MERN Stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Entry Level MERN Stack Developer, you need a solid understanding of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and proficiency in MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp certification. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and common development tools such as Visual Studio Code is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for collaborating in a remote environment. These skills ensure you can build, maintain, and troubleshoot full-stack web applications efficiently while working independently and as part of a distributed team.

Job description

Good developers, not rockstars.

We hire people, not skill sets. If you're a motivated, creative developer who wants to work in a lively and encouraging environment, let's talk.

Over the past 29 years we've cultivated a great group of people to work with. Our developers are smart, thoughtful, respectful, opinionated, dedicated, and fun. We don't hire often, but when we do, we value these qualities as much as technical abilities.

Founded by a former computer science professor, we keep the same feel as a small computer science lab (without the all-nighters):

  • Challenging and varied projects
  • An informal, comfortable environment
  • Intelligent, engaged people
  • Stimulating and respectful technology discussions
  • Frequent mentoring
  • A culture of camaraderie and helpfulness
  • A uniquely egalitarian approach to development and design

Because teams at TechEmpower are small, ranging between 2 and 6 people, we need developers who can work on every aspect of an application ("full stack" developers). We rely on individual developers to do much of their own software design, with guidance and discussion. If it's yours to build, we want you to build it.

We set a high bar for our hires, because that autonomy arrives early. If you're at the start of your career, you'll get frequent mentoring and design guidance from day one — and real ownership of your own work as soon as you're ready for it, which we expect to be soon.

Each new project means new technologies, new people, and new approaches. We work hard to improve each other's technical capabilities, so you'll never stop learning.

We pride ourselves on doing the best we can for our clients. This means helping them to really understand what they need, careful planning and design, and on-time, on-target deliveries, while maintaining a sensible work/life balance. You'll build quality applications and have fun doing it.

We're an AI-Forward Company

AI is not a side experiment here. It's part of how we work every day and a growing share of what we build for our clients.

  • You'll build AI. Our client work increasingly means LLM-centric applications: assistants, retrieval over private data, document and workflow automation, and agentic tooling. We want developers who are excited to design and ship these systems, not just talk about them.
  • You'll build with AI. Our developers use AI coding assistants as a normal part of the job, and we're looking for people who are eager to work that way. Fluency comes with practice. What matters more is the appetite for it, plus a healthy skepticism about what the tools hand back.
  • You'll help us figure it out. This field is moving faster than anyone's playbook. We share what we learn, argue about what actually works, and give everyone room to bring new approaches to their projects.

You don't need prior professional AI experience, just real curiosity and an appetite for picking it up as you go.

Fully Remote

This role is 100% remote within the United States. Our teams are small and collaborative, so we ask that you be online for core hours of 10am–2pm Pacific

You must already be authorized to work in the United States — we are not able to sponsor visas, now or in the future.

Technologies We Use

The technologies we use vary with our mix of projects. What follows is the full range across all of our teams — not a checklist for one person. A developer might touch a good portion of it over several years here, and that variety is a large part of the appeal:

  • Languages: Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, C#, PHP
  • Tools: Git, GitHub Actions, Docker, IntelliJ, VS Code, Maven, Gradle
  • AI Assistants: Cursor, Claude Code, Codex
  • Web: React, Vue, Angular, Spring Boot, ASP.NET Core, Django, FastAPI, Node
  • AI Engineering: LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, vector databases, agent frameworks
  • Mobile: iOS, Android
  • Hosting: AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, etc.), Azure, containerized Linux deployments
  • Databases: ORMs (Hibernate, etc.), MySQL, Postgres, MS SQL Server, NoSQL (Redis, MongoDB)
  • Big Data: data lakes and lakehouses (S3, Iceberg, Delta Lake), warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), ETL/ELT pipelines (Airflow, dbt), streaming (Kafka), Spark

Nobody here knows all of this, and we don't expect a new hire to arrive with more than a corner of it. We do expect you'll learn more of it every day.

Benefits

Our competitive benefits package includes comprehensive medical and dental insurance. Eligibility is subject to the terms, conditions, and requirements of the applicable plans. TechEmpower also provides and pays 100% of our life insurance plan.

TechEmpower offers a comprehensive 401K plan. Eligibility begins after one year of service. We also believe in sharing our success with employees. Profit sharing is based on the profits earned by the company, and employees may be eligible for additional profit sharing at the end of the year.

We provide the equipment you need to do your job well. Paid time off is typically 10 days per year.

Equal Opportunity

The Company provides equal employment opportunity without regard to race, color, gender, gender identity, age, disability, religion, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, ancestry, or status as a veteran.
