What is remote engineering?

Remote engineering refers to engineering work that is performed outside of a traditional office or job site, typically from home or another remote location. Remote engineers use digital tools and communication platforms to collaborate with teams, design systems, write code, or manage projects from anywhere in the world. This work arrangement allows for greater flexibility and can help companies access a wider pool of talent. However, it also requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to maintain productivity and teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Engineer, you need strong technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and experience with distributed systems or remote collaboration. Familiarity with tools such as Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and team communication software like Slack or Zoom is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication distinguish top performers in remote settings. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality engineering solutions and maintaining productivity while collaborating with geographically dispersed teams.

How do remote engineering teams typically coordinate and communicate to ensure project success?

Remote engineering teams commonly use a combination of collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and GitHub to stay connected and manage projects efficiently. Regular virtual stand-ups, sprint planning meetings, and code reviews help maintain alignment and transparency among team members. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential to overcome time zone differences and prevent misunderstandings. Most teams also establish shared coding standards and utilize version control to streamline contributions from multiple engineers working remotely.

Job description

Summary

Yelp engineering culture is driven by our values: we're a cooperative team that values individual authenticity and encourages creative solutions to problems. All new engineers deploy working code their first week, and we strive to broaden individual impact with support from managers, mentors, and teams. At the end of the day, we're all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun in a collaborative environment.

At Yelp, our Full Stack Engineers are the driving force behind every product development stage. You'll have the opportunity to build innovative features and applications that make Yelp the go-to platform for discovering and supporting local businesses. Our mission is to deliver an exceptional user experience, and our engineers dive deep into every layer of the web stack to bring this vision to life. If you're passionate about creating meaningful technology and want to see your work make a real difference, we want you on our team!

On the Growth team, you will design, build, and optimize experiences that convert hundreds of thousands of mobile web users into Yelp app installs by developing high-visibility features that drive user acquisition. You will collaborate closely with multiple Engineering, Product, Legal, Design, and Marketing teams to provide high-quality solutions.

This opportunity is fully remote and does not require you to be located in any particular area in Canada. We welcome applicants from throughout Canada. We'd love to have you apply, even if you don't feel you meet every single requirement in this posting. At Yelp, we're looking for great people, not just those who simply check off all the boxes.

What you'll do:
  • Architect and lead the implementation of highly reliable and easy-to-understand product features.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to shape our product and technical roadmaps.
  • Deploy projects in a service-oriented architecture, all the way from backend services to fully-featured UIs.
  • Run A/B experiments and dive into the resulting data to look for trends.
  • Mentor other engineers and share the skills you've learned.
  • As part of the final panel interview for this role, you'll complete a coding exercise using React and Flask in a code repository platform. The code repo platform offers an optional AI chatbot for syntax lookups and clarifying questions during the exercise.
What it takes to succeed:
  • Ideally 3-5 years of industry experience .
  • Deep understanding of at least one popular server-side web framework (Django, Flask, Rails, Pyramid, Laravel, Express, etc.). and a modern JS frontend framework (React, Angular, Vue, Ember, etc.).
  • Proven ability to lead large projects involving multiple people in a highly collaborative, asynchronous, and distributed environment.
  • Experience leading or contributing to technical roadmaps.
  • Experience mentoring other engineers.
What you'll get:
  • There are a variety of factors that go into determining a compensation range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data and years of experience. Based on the anticipated level of experience that we are seeking, we expect the compensation range for this role to be between $89,000 and $134,000.  The actual compensation offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience and skill set. There may be flexibility with the range included in this posting should a candidate be leveled higher or lower than the posted range.
  • This opportunity has the option to be fully remote in all locations across Canada.
  • This role is posted to fill an existing position.
  • You can find more information about Yelp's five star benefits here!
