What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Engineer, you need strong technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and experience with distributed systems or remote collaboration. Familiarity with tools such as Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and team communication software like Slack or Zoom is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication distinguish top performers in remote settings. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality engineering solutions and maintaining productivity while collaborating with geographically dispersed teams.

What is remote engineering?

Remote engineering refers to engineering work that is performed outside of a traditional office or job site, typically from home or another remote location. Remote engineers use digital tools and communication platforms to collaborate with teams, design systems, write code, or manage projects from anywhere in the world. This work arrangement allows for greater flexibility and can help companies access a wider pool of talent. However, it also requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to maintain productivity and teamwork.

How do remote engineering teams typically coordinate and communicate to ensure project success?

Remote engineering teams commonly use a combination of collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and GitHub to stay connected and manage projects efficiently. Regular virtual stand-ups, sprint planning meetings, and code reviews help maintain alignment and transparency among team members. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential to overcome time zone differences and prevent misunderstandings. Most teams also establish shared coding standards and utilize version control to streamline contributions from multiple engineers working remotely.

Director of Software Engineeringย
We are seeking an experienced Director of Software Engineeringโ€ฏresponsible for the strategic leadership, architecture, and delivery of the companyโ€™s new, modern application platform. This role oversees multiple engineering teams, sets technical direction and standards across the organization, and owns the balance between greenfield platform development and the responsible modernization of legacy systems.

The role requires strong technical grounding in C# and .NET, proven experience building and leading engineering teams, and the ability to partner with executive leadership to align engineering strategy with business priorities.ย

Whatย youโ€™ll do:ย

  • Own the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for a new suite of applications built on C# and .NETย
  • Set and enforce engineering standards for scalable, well-structured RESTful APIs and supporting services across all teamsย
  • Build, lead, and grow a team of engineers and engineering managers, including hiring, performance management, and career developmentย
  • Establish and champion Test-Driven Development (TDD) and other engineering best practices organization-wideย
  • Provide technical oversight through architecture and design reviews, upholding quality, security, and design standardsย
  • Mentor and develop engineering managers and senior engineers, fostering a culture of technical growth and accountabilityย
  • Own the engineering roadmap and delivery planning, working with product, design, and business stakeholdersย
  • Oversee resourcing and prioritization for legacy system support and maintenance during modernization effortsย
  • Partner with the VP of Engineering, product leadership, and other executive stakeholders on technical direction, budget, and delivery planningย

Whatย we're looking for:ย

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experienceย
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experienceย
  • 4+ years leading and managing engineering teams or managers of teamsย
  • Strong technical background in C# and .NET, with hands-on experience designing and building APIs, preferably with ASP.NET Coreย
  • Demonstrated success building and scaling engineering organizationsย
  • Strong practical experience with Test-Driven Development and modern engineering best practicesย
  • Working knowledge of Blazor (Server or WebAssembly) or similar modern web UI frameworksย
  • Experience with recent versions of .NET (.NET 6+), Entity Framework, and cloud platforms (Azure preferred)ย
  • Prior leadership of a significant application rewrite or greenfield system buildย
  • Proficiency with Git-based version control and issue tracking tools (e.g., GitHub, JIRA)ย
  • Proven ability to lead and manage distributed, remote engineering teams effectivelyย
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts to both engineering and executive audiencesย
  • Experience managing engineering budgets, headcount planning, and vendor/tooling decisionsย

What we offer:ย

  • A base salary of $160,000-$180,000/annually, based on experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance.ย
  • 401(k) plan optionsย
  • Paid time off, sick time, and paid holidays.ย
  • A fully remote work environment with flexibility and autonomy.ย
  • The opportunity to grow with a dynamic, innovative team in a startup-like culture.ย
