Remote Engineering Plan Reviewer information

What does a remote engineering plan reviewer do?

A Remote Engineering Plan Reviewer is responsible for examining engineering plans and documents, such as site layouts, structural designs, and infrastructure projects, to ensure they comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations. This role is performed remotely, allowing reviewers to assess digital submissions from anywhere. They coordinate with engineers, architects, and local authorities to clarify requirements and address any discrepancies or needed corrections. Their work helps ensure that construction projects are safe, efficient, and legally compliant before any physical work begins.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote engineering plan reviewer?

To thrive as a Remote Engineering Plan Reviewer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, building codes, and plan analysis, typically supported by a degree in civil, structural, or related engineering and relevant licensure (such as PE). Familiarity with digital plan review software, CAD systems, and project management tools is essential for efficient remote work. Attention to detail, effective written communication, and strong problem-solving skills are critical soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate, compliant plan reviews and effective collaboration with project stakeholders from a remote environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote engineering plan reviewers and how can they be addressed?

Remote engineering plan reviewers often face challenges such as limited direct communication with project teams, potential delays in receiving supporting documentation, and the need to manage multiple digital platforms for document review and collaboration. To address these challenges, it's helpful to establish clear communication channels with stakeholders, use structured file-sharing systems, and set regular check-ins to clarify project requirements. Additionally, developing strong organizational skills and being proactive in asking questions can help ensure accuracy and efficiency while working remotely.

The ideal candidate combines strong project-management discipline with practical renewable-energy construction and engineering experience. The candidate must be capable of identifying technical and commercial risks, maintaining clear written records, managing multiple concurrent projects, and communicating effectively with both technical and executive audiences.
Preferred Experience
  • At least 1 to 3 years managing utility-scale solar, BESS, wind, substation, or transmission projects.

  • Development and due diligence

  • Design review

  • Procurement and RFP support

  • Construction oversight

  • Commissioning and performance testing

  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering reviews, including civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, SCADA, controls, substation, and interconnection.

  • Familiarity with EPC contracts, technical specifications, project schedules, payment applications, change orders, RFIs, submittals, NCRs, punch lists, and turnover documentation.

  • Experience coordinating site representatives, construction managers, inspectors, and testing personnel.

  • Develop and maintain project execution plans, deliverable registers, responsibility matrices, schedules, budgets, and action logs.

  • Coordinate internal engineering reviews and consolidate discipline comments into clear, client-ready deliverables.

  • Review project drawings, specifications, studies, calculations, equipment documentation, schedules, and contractor submittals.

  • Track technical risks, open items, design changes, construction issues, commissioning constraints, and contractual milestones.

  • Lead kickoff meetings, weekly project meetings, design-review calls, construction meetings, and monthly management reviews.

  • Manage full-time and periodic site personnel, including work priorities, reporting expectations, escalation paths, and deliverable quality.

  • Review field reports, photographs, punch lists, NCRs, test results, and commissioning records.

  • Support evaluation of payment applications, schedule updates, change orders, claims, and milestone completion.

  • Prepare concise written recommendations that clearly identify the issue, risk, required corrective action, responsible party, and due date.

  • Maintain project records sufficient to support financing, tax equity, lender, owner, and contractual reliance requirements.

  • Monitor project financial performance, staffing, utilization, scope compliance, and forecast-to-complete.

  • Identify out-of-scope requests and support preparation of amendments or additional-services proposals.

  • Escalate material safety, quality, schedule, cost, and technical risks promptly.

  • Support proposal development, staffing plans, fee estimates, client presentations, and business-development activities.

Education and Credentials
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a related technical field preferred.

  • Electrical, civil, mechanical, or structural engineering background is beneficial.

  • OSHA 30 or equivalent construction-safety training preferred.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites required.

Travel Expectations
  • Approximately 20% travel, depending on project assignments.

  • Travel may include construction sites, manufacturing facilities, client offices, and commissioning activities.

  • Candidate must be comfortable working around active construction and energized facilities while following site safety requirements.
