Job description

Structural Engineering Intern | New York, NY

This posting is for Summer 2027 Internship opportunities.

IMEG is hiring a Structural Engineering Intern in New York, NY to support the analysis, design, and implementation of structural systems in buildings and other structures. Over 10-12 weeks, you'll assist a team of experienced engineers and consultants with real project work while building hands-on experience in structural design consulting.

In this role, you'll help support project budgets, documentation, and coordination with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. You will join a structural team serving commercial and institutional work across the New York metro, with active projects spanning housing, healthcare, education, and civic or government settings, contributing to sustainable design goals including SE2050.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with design portions of structural projects according to code and IMEG standards.

  • Assist with researching project resources.

  • Assist with client relations, maintain the project design notebook, and provide documentation for permanent record files.

  • Assist with coordinating design and schedule with other disciplines such as architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical and suppliers.

  • Assist with documenting design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring project design progress.

  • Assist with reviewing project documents for accuracy and completeness before requesting a final check.

  • Assist with preparation and issuance of addendum information.

  • Conduct periodic job site observations and other services as required by the contract services agreement.

What You'll Bring

Education

  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering, or equivalent, required

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Strong interest in design consulting

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software

  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Preferred

  • Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds

  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull

  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises

State of New York Pay Range: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.

Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate's experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
