What is a remote engineering intern?

Remote engineering interns are students or recent graduates who work on engineering projects for a company or organization from a location outside the traditional office, typically from home. They gain practical experience by collaborating virtually with professional engineers and teams, often using digital tools for communication and project management. These internships allow individuals to develop technical and soft skills, work on real-world challenges, and build their resumes while maintaining a flexible schedule. Remote engineering internships are available in various fields, including software, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering.

How do remote engineering interns typically collaborate with their teams despite working off-site?

Remote Engineering Interns usually work closely with their teams through video conferencing, instant messaging, and collaborative development platforms like GitHub or Jira. Regular check-ins, virtual stand-up meetings, and shared documentation ensure everyone stays aligned and projects progress smoothly. Interns are encouraged to proactively communicate, ask questions, and participate in team discussions to maximize learning and contribution. This structure fosters a supportive environment and helps remote interns build strong professional relationships.

Is it possible to get a remote engineering internship?

Yes, remote engineering internships are widely available and often offered by technology companies, startups, and organizations seeking to hire interns with skills in programming, software development, or engineering tools. Applicants typically need relevant coursework, technical skills, and sometimes prior project experience, and many internships are structured to be flexible for remote work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote engineering intern?

To thrive as a Remote Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and relevant coursework or a degree in progress. Familiarity with collaboration tools like GitHub, project management software, and basic programming languages is often expected. Strong communication, self-motivation, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for remote work environments. These skills and qualities are important for effectively contributing to projects, managing tasks independently, and collaborating with distributed teams.

Bedrock Robotics

Full-time

Job description

Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world
At Bedrock, we're moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team is composed of industry veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we're deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction machinery across the country, accelerating project schedules of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and improving safety on job sites. Backed by $350M in funding, we're working quickly to close the gap between America's surging demand for housing, data centers, manufacturing hubs, and the construction industry's growing labor shortage.
This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You'll collaborate with construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch. If you're ready to apply cutting-edge technology to solve meaningful problems alongside a talented team-we'd love to have you join us.
The Mission:
At Bedrock, we aren't just building robots; we are redefining how the world moves earth. We are looking for a Senior level Robotics Application Engineer who thrives at the intersection of heavy machinery, cutting-edge autonomy, and real-world grit.
What You'll Do:
In this role, you won't be stuck behind a desk. You'll be the bridge between our advanced R&D lab and the rugged reality of a construction site. Your job is to take our autonomous excavators and make them perform - turning lines of code into moved dirt and satisfied customers. As a "Full-Stack" Robotics Engineer, you will own the success of our deployments through:
  • Data-Driven Evaluation: Run evaluations on site data to predict autonomous performance and validate release readiness before the buckets start digging.
  • Real-Time Problem Solving: Debug complex issues across the entire stack-from hydraulic sensors and compute hardware to high-level behavior. Employ a breadth of technical knowledge to dig into both onboard and offboard code to keep the mission moving.
  • Technical Strategy: Collaborate closely with Partnerships to identify new customer sites that align with our product roadmap and provide technical feedback to our engineering team to influence the next generation of Bedrock systems.
  • Customer Partnership: Translate "robot-speak" into value. You will lead discussions on site progression, explain how the system integrates into our customers' work, and how to maximize its performance on a job site.

What We're Looking For:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in a technical role focused on keeping critical onboard and off-board systems operating smoothly
  • Hands-on experience with deployed robotics is a massive plus
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, deployed to customer sites across the U.S.

Your Technical Toolkit:
We need a generalist who can navigate the complexities of a modern autonomous system.
  • Software - Proficiency in Python, Rust, C++, etc, Linux. Experience with version control and deploying code in "live" environments.
  • Systems - Strong understanding of robotics stacks - sensor fusion (LiDAR, GNSS, IMU), computer vision, motion planning, controls, embedded systems.
  • Hardware - Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems, CAN bus communication, and interact with industry debug tools.
  • Data - Experience with data visualization and analytical tools to turn raw logs into performance metrics.

Who You Are:
  • Adaptable: You are as comfortable in a hard hat and boots as you are in a terminal window.
  • Decisive: You can make high-stakes technical decisions onsite to minimize downtime.
  • Communicator: You can explain a Kalman Filter to a developer and a cycle-time improvement to a site foreman with equal clarity.
  • Willing Traveler: You love the "field" and are ready to be where the work is.

Our roles are often flexible. If you don't fit all the criteria, or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY) please apply anyway! We'd love to consider you.
