What is a remote engineer?

A Remote Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software, systems, or infrastructure while working outside of a traditional office environment, typically from home or another remote location. Remote Engineers use digital tools and communication platforms to collaborate with their teams and manage projects. This role requires strong technical skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently. Many technology companies offer remote engineering positions to access a broader talent pool and provide greater flexibility for employees.

How to get a remote job as an engineer?

The primary qualifications for getting a remote job as an engineer are a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and several years of experience in a programming role. Many software engineers spend time in other roles to gain experience before applying for this job, which is a relatively senior programming role. Companies often have specific requests or requirements for software engineers, such as experience with particular types of programming, so diversifying your skills and working with a variety of different systems can help you stand out from other engineers. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of a remote software engineer requires communication skills and reliable access to high-speed internet.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Engineer, you need strong technical expertise in software development, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and remote collaboration tools such as Slack and Jira is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are crucial soft skills for remote success. These competencies ensure productivity, effective teamwork, and the ability to deliver high-quality solutions from any location.

How does a remote engineer typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote Engineers often work with colleagues who are spread across various locations and time zones, which requires strong communication and coordination skills. Collaboration is usually facilitated through tools like Slack, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams, with scheduled meetings arranged to accommodate as many team members as possible. It's common to use shared project management platforms and clear documentation to keep everyone aligned. Flexibility and proactive communication are key to ensuring seamless teamwork and project progress, even when direct overlap in working hours is limited.

Job description

Being an Oakwell engineer means being an owner's engineer and their trusted partner. Oakwell is a real estate and infrastructure firm that provides capital, engineering, and project delivery services to hospitals and universities. Our engineers take pride in their professional autonomy and combine technical leadership with strategic influence to shape major infrastructure initiatives from concept through completion.
$670M+ saved across 150+ projects — and counting. That efficiency is on track to expand access to healthcare and education for 1,000,000 people. We are looking for partners to help us get there. Multiple remote opportunities available.
What you'll drive You will work alongside senior Oakwell engineers and health-system clients to conceptualize and implement 10-year sustainability and decarbonization plans — cutting energy consumption, carbon, and cost; renewing infrastructure and driving electrification; aligning sustainability with the client's real estate master plan; and creating sustainable MEP construction standards.
**This is a remote position with a preference for candidates located near our Boston, MA headquarters**
What you'll do:

  • Audit, benchmark, and document existing facilities and MEP systems — evaluating energy use and carbon against comparable sites, reviewing condition drawings, and gathering plant-operations insight from facility staff.
  • Retro-commission existing mechanical systems: central plant, air handling, terminal equipment, and energy management systems.
  • Develop multi-phase, ROI-driven ECMs (Energy Conservation Measures), estimating savings with our custom energy-modeling software.
  • Produce clear reports on facility conditions, recommendations, cost savings, and ROI — and present findings directly to clients.
  • Complete utility technical-assistance studies to secure efficiency incentives.
  • Prepare scope narratives, EMS points lists and sequences of operations, and scaled drawings and specifications for contractor pricing and installation.
  • Lead construction meetings and commission new systems and controls through implementation.
  • Help build Oakwell's sustainable MEP standards — and the AI and machine-learning tools that make our analysis faster.
What you'll bring:

  • Must have: Bachelor's in Engineering (any field); 5–7 years of experience; a Professional Engineering license or active progress toward one; availability to travel as needed (~20%); competency with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
  • Nice to have: Client-facing experience; proficiency in Autodesk Revit and eQUEST; interest in building AI/ML tools that streamline engineering workflows.

Meet most of these and excited by the mission? Apply even if you don't check every box.
What makes you a great Oakwell teammate?
  • You take ownership and demonstrate agency to drive projects forward.
  • Working collaboratively in a team is second nature to you.
  • You thrive in ambiguity and changing priorities while delivering with consistency.
Benefits & Perks
Medical, Dental & Vision · Company-paid life and short/long-term disability insurance · HSA + medical and dependent-care FSAs · Voluntary accident & critical-illness coverage · 401(k) with company match · Paid company holidays and PTO · Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Location & Compensation
Remote, with travel to client sites as needed (~20%).  Headquartered in Boston, MA· Competitive Compensation + Benefits.
