What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, proficiency in C/C++ programming, and experience with embedded hardware and software design. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (like Git), and RTOS platforms, as well as certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills are essential for developing reliable, high-performance embedded solutions while collaborating efficiently in distributed teams.

How do remote embedded systems engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams when working off-site?

Remote Embedded Systems Engineers often collaborate with hardware teams through video conferencing, collaborative design tools, and remote access to development boards. Regular virtual meetings are scheduled for project updates, troubleshooting, and aligning on hardware-software integration requirements. To stay effective, engineers may use remote debugging tools and sometimes ship prototype hardware to their home office, ensuring they can test and validate firmware in real time. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential for overcoming the physical distance and ensuring successful project outcomes.

What is a remote embedded systems engineer?

A Remote Embedded Systems Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems—while working remotely. These engineers work with hardware and software, often programming microcontrollers or processors, to create solutions for products like smart devices, automotive systems, or industrial machines. Their remote role means they collaborate virtually with teams, using tools for code development, debugging, and communication. Strong knowledge of C/C++, Linux, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is often required. Remote Embedded Systems Engineers play a crucial role in the growing fields of IoT, automation, and smart technologies.

What is the difference between Remote Embedded Systems Engineer vs Remote Firmware Developer?

Systems Engineer II
Information Technology Remote (U.S.) Full-Time Salary
$92,600 - $120,000 annually, plus Bonus Plan eligibility
ABOUT MMT
At Medical Manufacturing Technologies (MMT), streamlined manufacturing opens doors to innovation without limitation, and, ultimately, enhances lives. As a vertically integrated, global provider of automated, process-driven medical device manufacturing solutions, we bring together applications expertise, technical solutions, and comprehensive aftermarket support for our customers. Our mission is to enable the continuous advancement of medical technology and other critical markets, and we want every employee to come to work each day ready to do the best work of their career in a safe, diverse, and collaborative environment.
ABOUT THE ROLE
MMT is looking for a Systems Engineer II to join our IT team and help keep the backend infrastructure running that powers a multi-site manufacturing environment. Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, you'll own the day-to-day health of our on-premise and Azure-based systems, provide advanced technical support across the organization, and partner with a small, sharp IT team to keep things running smoothly as MMT continues to grow.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Keep the lights on: deploy, configure, monitor, and maintain physical and virtual servers across a Hyper-V and VMware environment.
  • Own the cloud side: manage Azure, Entra ID, and Microsoft 365 environments, including Intune, networking, storage, and backup.
  • Support the team: provide Level 2-3 helpdesk support and work directly with the Cyber Administrator and Infrastructure Administrator.
  • Contribute to real projects: support multi-site IT initiatives and provide input on infrastructure performance and reliability.
  • Keep us secure: support security tooling including SIEM/EDR platforms, handle alert triage, and help with vulnerability scanning and backup/disaster recovery planning.

WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science preferred; an equivalent combination of education and relevant hands-on experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Generally, 5+ years of experience in Hyper-V and Windows Server administration, along with Office 365 administration; equivalent, demonstrated experience may be considered in lieu of these specific requirements.
  • Advanced Windows Server and Hyper-V administration, plus enterprise networking chops.
  • Advanced PowerShell scripting skills.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure, Entra ID, and Microsoft 365 administration.
  • Comfort supporting security tooling, including SIEM/EDR platforms and alert triage.

NICE TO HAVE
  • SQL Server administration.
  • ERP awareness.
  • Experience working within SOX-compliant environments.
  • VMware experience.
  • Linux administration, RHEL or another enterprise distribution preferred.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The base salary range for this remote position is $92,600 - $120,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, and location and is eligible for MMT's Bonus Plan. This role is eligible for MMT's comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k) with employer match, paid time off, tuition reimbursement, professional development opportunities, and employer-paid Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, Life, and AD&D insurance. Eligible employees may also participate in MMT's dependent scholarship program for children, grandchildren, or a child in their legal guardianship.
WHY YOU'LL WANT TO WORK HERE
This is a chance to own meaningful infrastructure work for a company that's building the technology behind life-changing medical devices, without needing to relocate. You'll get real ownership over projects, a tight-knit team that has your back, real room to grow through professional development opportunities, and a benefits package built for the long haul, including a 401(k) match, tuition reimbursement, and a scholarship program for your kids, grandkids, or the child in your life you're raising. If you like solving problems, want your work to matter, and are ready for a role where you're trusted to run things, we'd love to hear from you.
Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role. If you require accommodation during the application or interview process, please contact Human Resources.
