What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Embedded Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, proficiency in C/C++ programming, and experience with embedded hardware and software design. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (like Git), and RTOS platforms, as well as certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills are essential for developing reliable, high-performance embedded solutions while collaborating efficiently in distributed teams.

How do Remote Embedded Systems Engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams when working off-site?

Remote Embedded Systems Engineers often collaborate with hardware teams through video conferencing, collaborative design tools, and remote access to development boards. Regular virtual meetings are scheduled for project updates, troubleshooting, and aligning on hardware-software integration requirements. To stay effective, engineers may use remote debugging tools and sometimes ship prototype hardware to their home office, ensuring they can test and validate firmware in real time. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential for overcoming the physical distance and ensuring successful project outcomes.

What is a Remote Embedded Systems Engineer?

A Remote Embedded Systems Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems—while working remotely. These engineers work with hardware and software, often programming microcontrollers or processors, to create solutions for products like smart devices, automotive systems, or industrial machines. Their remote role means they collaborate virtually with teams, using tools for code development, debugging, and communication. Strong knowledge of C/C++, Linux, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is often required. Remote Embedded Systems Engineers play a crucial role in the growing fields of IoT, automation, and smart technologies.

What is the difference between Remote Embedded Systems Engineer vs Remote Firmware Developer?

AspectRemote Embedded Systems EngineerRemote Firmware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; knowledge of embedded C/C++Bachelor's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering; proficiency in embedded C, assembly, and RTOS
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing hardware-software integration, often in R&D labs or remote setupsDeveloping low-level code for hardware devices, often in embedded systems or IoT projects
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics, automotive, aerospace, IoT companiesConsumer electronics, industrial automation, IoT device manufacturers

While both roles involve working with embedded hardware and software, the Remote Embedded Systems Engineer typically focuses on system design, integration, and testing, whereas the Remote Firmware Developer specializes in writing low-level firmware code for specific hardware components. Both roles require similar technical skills and often overlap in industry applications.

Job description

The Principal Solutions & Value Architect is a senior technical architecture role responsible for designing end-to-end enterprise solutions across cloud, software engineering, data, IoT, and AI/ML environments.

In this role, you will act as the first technical authority in go-to-market initiatives, defining solution architecture, validating technical feasibility, and shaping system designs in collaboration with engineering and delivery teams. You will work across modern and legacy enterprise systems, translating complex requirements into scalable architecture designs, integration approaches, and implementation roadmaps grounded in real engineering constraints.

Please note: This is a technical architecture role requiring strong hands-on experience in system design and software engineering concepts, not a purely business or strategy consulting position — it requires the ability to operate at the level of engineering architecture, not business-level advisory only.

Location: Remote in US (preferably Eastern or Central US)

Employment Type: Full-Time

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor to enterprise clients, leading discovery sessions to understand business challenges, technical constraints, and system landscapes.
  • Translate complex business requirements into structured technical architectures, solution designs, and multi-phase transformation roadmaps.
  • Design scalable, secure, and maintainable enterprise architectures spanning cloud, software engineering, data platforms, AI/ML, IoT, and integration ecosystems.
  • Develop clear technical proposals, solution overviews, and executive-facing summaries that connect architectural decisions to measurable business outcomes.
  • Define ROI frameworks and value models in collaboration with stakeholders to support decision-making and solution justification.
  • Lead technical solution shaping in collaboration with engineering and delivery teams, ensuring feasibility, alignment, and smooth transition from pre-sales to delivery.
  • Prepare Statements of Work (SOWs) and support technical risk assessments, ensuring architectural clarity and delivery readiness prior to project initiation.
  • Deliver high-impact presentations to technical and business stakeholders, clearly communicating solution design, trade-offs, and business value in an accessible manner.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • 12+ years of experience in solution architecture, technical consulting, or enterprise-grade system design within technology or professional services environments.
  • Strong track record of designing and shaping complex, enterprise-scale solutions, with a strong focus on aligning technical infrastructure directly with business transformation goals.
  • Deep experience translating business requirements into structured architectural designs, technical roadmaps, and implementation approaches.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, with experience producing architecture documents, solution proposals, and executive summaries.
  • Ability to operate as a bridge between technical engineering teams and business stakeholders, ensuring alignment across all levels of an organization.
  • Experience working in pre-sales or consultative environments supporting enterprise solution design.

INDUSTRY & TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Deep hands-on expertise in designing enterprise-scale distributed systems across cloud-native platforms, software engineering, data-intensive systems, and AI/ML-driven architectures.
  • Proven ability to work directly with engineering teams to define system architecture, validate technical feasibility, and shape implementation approaches across cloud, data, AI/ML, and IoT domains.
  • Strong understanding of modern cloud platforms (AWS / Azure / GCP), including infrastructure design, scalability patterns, security principles, and production-grade system reliability considerations.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into concrete technical system designs, including architecture diagrams, component decomposition, and integration flows.
  • Comfortable engaging in detailed technical discussions with senior engineers (software, cloud, data, AI) and challenging assumptions around scalability, performance, and system constraints.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Strong understanding of Embedded Systems, Edge Computing, and device-to-cloud architectures.
  • Experience with IoT platforms, protocol-level understanding (e.g., MQTT, HTTP-based systems), and hardware/software integration patterns.
  • Background in software engineering or solution architecture with strong system design depth (not only consulting or pre-sales)

Compensation: We offer a competitive, experience-based salary aligned with market benchmarks. Compensation will be discussed individually and tailored to skills, seniority and scope of responsibilities.
