What is a remote embedded software engineer?

A remote embedded software engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or specialized hardware, while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. These engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams, write code for real-time or resource-constrained systems, and use remote tools to debug and deploy software. They may work in industries like automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, or industrial automation. Remote embedded software engineers rely on communication and project management tools to coordinate with their teams and ensure product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote embedded software engineers often face challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, coordinating with hardware teams across locations, and ensuring clear communication about design specifications. To overcome these, teams typically use simulation tools, remote access labs, and detailed documentation. Regular virtual meetings and collaborative platforms also help maintain alignment and facilitate troubleshooting in distributed environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Embedded Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Software Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems programming (typically in C/C++), hardware interfacing, and a relevant degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, version control systems (e.g., Git), and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in a distributed team environment. These skills ensure reliable software integration with hardware, efficient collaboration, and successful delivery of complex embedded solutions.

What is the difference between Remote Embedded Software vs Remote Firmware Engineer?

AspectRemote Embedded SoftwareRemote Firmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related; experience with embedded systemsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related; experience with firmware development

Job description

We're looking for an experienced AI Software Engineer with 6-8 years of experience to join our AI applications team. This is a fully remote position for candidates in the continental U.S., with work hours aligned to the Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone. You will be instrumental in the entire software development lifecycle, from initial design to final delivery, creating AI-powered software products that aid military commanders and business leaders in making mission-critical decisions. The ideal candidate will have exceptional algorithmic and problem-solving skills, and a strong background in software engineering, enabling them to make an immediate impact on our projects. We are committed to providing you with the necessary tools and training to produce world-class software.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborative Design & Implementation: You will collaboratively design, implement, and test AI enabled software systems. This role involves leveraging cutting-edge technologies, including GenAI and machine learning models.
  • Modular Systems Development: Develop modular systems within a distributed architecture, such as with RESTful containerized microservices.
  • Performance Optimization: Review and analyze software runtime performance, making algorithmic and performance improvements.
  • Agile Development: Use agile development techniques throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience: 6-8 years of experience in software development, including design, coding, testing, and delivery.
  • Core Skills: You should have mastery in object-oriented design and programming, as well as knowledge of design patterns and algorithmic analysis.
  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in Python is a must, experience with other languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, or C++ is useful but not critical.
  • GenAI: Experience building applications leveraging LLMs as a core component
  • Work Environment: Experience working in a small, remote team environment is preferred.
  • Government Clearance: You must be a U.S. citizen and eligible for a government security clearance (Secret Clearance).

Bonus Experience

  • AI/ML: Exposure to AI and/or Machine Learning technologies is a plus.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Experience with discrete event simulation, geospatial and/or temporal databases, and performing scientific evaluations and comparisons is highly valued.
  • Google Cloud Platform: Experience using and deploying technologies onto GCP, existing GCP credentials, and familiarity with VertexAI.
  • Technical Familiarity: Familiarity with technologies such as Docker, Node, and REST APIs is a bonus. Experience with database systems such as Firebase and PostgreSQL.
