What is a remote embedded software engineer?

A remote embedded software engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or specialized hardware, while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. These engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams, write code for real-time or resource-constrained systems, and use remote tools to debug and deploy software. They may work in industries like automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, or industrial automation. Remote embedded software engineers rely on communication and project management tools to coordinate with their teams and ensure product quality.

What are remote embedded software jobs?

Remote embedded software jobs include embedded software engineer positions. As a work from home embedded software engineer, you develop embedded software systems for a variety of computerized devices. Your responsibilities start with assessing your client’s needs. You then design and code the embedded software, troubleshoot your software systems, perform research and test actions on the software, and implement software updates whenever necessary. Other duties include maintaining the software programs, documenting solutions to issues, providing the necessary post-production support, and reviewing the implemented system to debug the embedded environment and interpret error reports.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Software Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems programming (typically in C/C++), hardware interfacing, and a relevant degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, version control systems (e.g., Git), and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in a distributed team environment. These skills ensure reliable software integration with hardware, efficient collaboration, and successful delivery of complex embedded solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote embedded software engineers often face challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, coordinating with hardware teams across locations, and ensuring clear communication about design specifications. To overcome these, teams typically use simulation tools, remote access labs, and detailed documentation. Regular virtual meetings and collaborative platforms also help maintain alignment and facilitate troubleshooting in distributed environments.

Job description

At Podium, we bring AI Employees to local businesses that turn every conversation into revenue. Trusted by 60,000+ businesses across Auto, Home Services, and Aesthetics, Podium captures and converts leads 24/7, driving both new business and repeat customers.
In under 24 months, we crossed $100M in AI Agent ARR, scaling 300% year-over-year. During this time, we've deployed 10,000 AI employees to empower real business outcomes for our customers. Podium is building what we believe will be the most impactful AI employee ecosystem for local business.
Podium has been recognized as the Best AI Implementation by Inc. Magazine, highlighted by OpenAI for building revenue-driving AI Agents, and awarded the #1 AI Agent for Business Operations by G2.
Our growth is fueled by hiring exceptional people, holding them to high standards, and creating opportunities for them to grow and make an impact. Our operating principles guide daily behavior and ensure we hire people who will thrive at Podium. If you're hungry for growth, aligned to our operating principles, and ready to get to work, you won't find a better place to learn and accelerate your career.
About the Role:
We're building the tools that help local businesses connect, grow, and win.
We're looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer who thinks like a product owner, someone who's scrappy, opinionated, and energized by taking something from zero to one. You care more about what ships than what stack you're shipping on, and you use AI tooling (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) as a genuine force multiplier, not a novelty.
What you will be doing:
You'll own features end-to-end, from the first design conversation to production, on a platform thousands of businesses rely on every day. You'll influence architecture, collaborate closely with product and design, and help keep our systems reliable as we scale. You'll also invest in the people around you: sharing knowledge, reviewing code, and raising the team's collective ceiling.
What you should have:
  • 7+ years building and shipping production systems, full stack.
  • A track record of owning problems end-to-end, not just executing tickets, but defining and delivering.
  • Strong instincts across the stack: you're comfortable going deep on backend logic, database design, and frontend UX in the same sprint.
  • Fluency with relational databases and search fundamentals.
  • A hands-on, daily relationship with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) - you've figured out how to move meaningfully faster with them.

What we hope you have:
  • Experience at a fast-moving startup or SaaS company.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems concepts: queues, event-driven architecture, horizontal scaling.
  • Exposure to our current stack (Elixir/Phoenix, React, PostgreSQL), or genuine curiosity to pick it up fast.
  • A genuine interest in helping teammates grow.
Why you'll love working here:
  • Podium is the best place to work to:
    • Join the leaders in AI agents
    • Unlock career-defining growth
    • Build with world-class talent
    • Make a real impact on local business
Benefits:
  • Open and transparent culture
  • Life insurance, long and short-term disability coverage
  • Paid maternity and paternity leave
  • Fertility Benefits
  • Generous vacation time, plus three 4-day summer holiday weekends
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401k Plan with company matching
  • Bi-annual swag drops with cool Podium gear and apparel
  • A stellar HQ (Utah) gym with local professional coaches and classes offered
  • Onsite HQ (Utah) child care center, subsidized for employees
