What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded software intern?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Software Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, C/C++ programming, and familiarity with microcontroller architectures, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework in electrical engineering or computer engineering. Experience with development tools such as integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and debugging hardware or simulators is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and learning. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to real-world embedded systems projects while adapting to remote teamwork and project demands.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded software interns, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Embedded Software Interns often encounter challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, coordinating with geographically dispersed teams, and troubleshooting issues without in-person support. To address these challenges, interns should proactively communicate with their mentors, make use of simulation tools, and participate in regular virtual meetings to stay aligned with project goals. Establishing a strong routine for documenting progress and asking for feedback can also help interns stay engaged and overcome obstacles effectively.

What is a remote embedded software intern?

A Remote Embedded Software Intern is a student or recent graduate who works remotely to assist in the development and testing of software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices. Their tasks often include writing code in languages like C or C++, debugging hardware-software interactions, and collaborating with engineering teams through virtual platforms. The position provides hands-on experience in embedded systems while allowing interns to work from anywhere, making it ideal for gaining industry experience without the need to relocate.

Staff Embedded Client Platform Engineer

AlphaSense

New York, NY โ€ข Remote

Full-time

Job description

About the Team:

Our diverse Product & Engineering team values innovation, collaboration, and the continuous improvement of our platform. We offer a dynamic work environment where employees can grow and thrive while working on cutting-edge technology that shapes the future of AI and search.

At AlphaSense, we believe that diverse experiences and perspectives are critical to our success. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and empowered to be their authentic selves.

About the Role:ย

Own and evolve AlphaSense's embedded client platform, starting with Excel, to bring AIpowered market intelligence directly into the daily workflows of financial professionals. This role is responsible for building missioncritical integrations inside constrained host environments where performance, correctness, and user trust are nonnegotiable.

Excel and PowerPoint are the first and most important host environments today, but the mandate is broader: define durable clientside integration patterns that can scale across tools, workflows, and future analyst surfaces.

This is a Staff-level role with significant architectural ownership, deep handson work, and longterm leverage across the product.

Why this role is important:

Financial professionals live in Excel. One data corruption bug, one performance regression, or one broken enterprise deployment can permanently erode trust. At the same time, Excel is a highly constrained, nonowned runtime with sharp edges, undocumented behavior, and strict performance ceilings.

We are looking for an engineer who thrives in hostile integration environments, not someone who treats Excel as "just another web view."

Who You Are:

  • 7+ years building and operating production userfacing software
  • Proven experience embedding software into a nonowned host environment
  • Strong JavaScript/TypeScript skills and eventdriven programming experience
  • Track record of performance profiling and optimization in constrained runtimes
  • Zerotolerance mindset for data corruption and reliability issues
  • Experience with enterprise deployment, updates, version skew, and rollback
  • Strong testing and observability instincts for clientside systems
  • Ability to mentor engineers and set technical standards

Nice to have:

  • Built systems where <100ms latency materially impacted user trust
  • Experience debugging nondeterministic, stateful, eventdriven systems
  • Background in financial systems, trading tools, or analyst workflows
  • Experience with offlinefirst architectures and sync
  • History of working effectively with enterprise IT and security teams

What You'll Do:ย

NearTerm (ExcelFocused)

  • Own the architecture and reliability of AlphaSense's Excel integrations (Office Addins, JS/TS, legacy components)
  • Define clear boundaries between workbook state, plugin state, and cloud state
  • Ensure zero data corruption and strict Excel file integrity guarantees
  • Make complex operations feel instantaneous (<100ms local, <500ms remote)
  • Design for offline, slow networks, and enterprise restrictions (proxy, SSO, lockeddown IT)
  • Establish testing, observability, and deployment best practices for desktop/embedded environments

MediumTerm (Platform Leverage)

  • Unify fragmented Excel tools into a single, coherent client architecture
  • Create reusable abstractions for embedded client development
  • Define patterns that reduce Excelspecific fragility over time
  • Mentor other engineers working in constrained client environments
