Remote Embedded Controls Engineer information

What is a remote embedded controls engineer?

Remote Embedded Controls Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain embedded control systems for various devices or machinery, while working from a remote location. They work with both hardware and software to ensure systems like automotive controls, industrial machines, or IoT devices function as intended. Their responsibilities include writing firmware, debugging control systems, integrating sensors and actuators, and ensuring real-time performance. Remote positions allow them to collaborate with teams and manage projects using online tools, making this role accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.

How do remote embedded controls engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams given the remote work setting?

Remote Embedded Controls Engineers regularly collaborate with hardware, software, and testing teams through virtual meetings, version control platforms, and collaborative documentation tools. Clear communication and proactive status updates are essential, as team members may be distributed across different time zones. Engineers often participate in code reviews, design discussions, and troubleshooting sessions via video calls or messaging platforms, ensuring alignment on project goals and integration timelines. While remote, they are still expected to contribute actively to problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded controls engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Controls Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems design, control theory, and proficiency with programming languages such as C/C++, along with a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation tools, and often certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and excellent remote communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for developing reliable embedded control solutions and collaborating effectively within distributed engineering teams.

What is the difference between Remote Embedded Controls Engineer vs Remote Firmware Engineer?

AspectRemote Embedded Controls EngineerRemote Firmware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering; experience with embedded systemsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related; proficiency in embedded programming
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing embedded control systems for machinery and automationDeveloping low-level firmware for devices and hardware components
Industry UsageManufacturing, robotics, industrial automationConsumer electronics, IoT devices, hardware startups

While both roles involve embedded systems, the Remote Embedded Controls Engineer focuses on designing and integrating control systems for machinery, whereas the Remote Firmware Engineer specializes in developing firmware that runs directly on hardware components. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and application.

Job description

Overview

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

At KPMG, you will join a team responsible for delivering secure, scalable, and reliable cloud platforms that enable innovation across the firm. As part of the National Architecture – Platforms & Services group, this role supports the operational management, governance, automation, and continuous improvement of enterprise AWS platform capabilities.

We are seeking a Senior AWS Platform Engineer to manage platform-level activities across two AWS Organizations. The role is focused on AWS platform administration, Terraform-led automation, cloud governance, operational reporting, and stakeholder communication. The successful candidate will bring strong technical depth, a self-starter mindset, and the ability to communicate platform status, risks, and recommendations clearly through documentation and stakeholder-ready presentations.

What you will do
  • Manage platform-level activities for two AWS Organizations within the National Architecture – Platforms & Services group.
  • Administer, govern, and evolve enterprise AWS environments, including multi-account structures, account lifecycle patterns, and organization-level controls.
  • Design and maintain Terraform-based Infrastructure as Code standards, reusable modules, and deployment patterns that improve consistency, scalability, and operational reliability.
  • Develop and support automation for AWS account provisioning, cloud configuration, identity controls, networking standards, monitoring, and operational processes.
  • Support cloud governance activities, including platform guardrails, security controls, compliance alignment, tagging standards, and configuration baselines.
  • Partner with architecture, security, operations, application, and business teams to translate requirements into secure and supportable cloud platform capabilities.
  • Monitor platform health, availability, reliability, and operational trends; identify and drive improvements to resiliency, automation, and supportability.
  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure, automation, deployment, and platform issues, including coordination with internal teams and vendors where required.
  • Produce clear operational reporting on platform activities, risks, progress, adoption, and improvement opportunities.
  • Prepare and present status decks, roadmaps, risks, accomplishments, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholder audiences.
  • Contribute to cloud engineering standards, DevOps practices, platform documentation, and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Take ownership of assigned outcomes and proactively identify opportunities to improve platform efficiency, cost management, control maturity, and operational effectiveness.

What you bring to the role
  • Extensive hands-on experience administering, engineering, and supporting AWS environments in an enterprise setting.

  • Strong experience working with AWS Organizations, multi-account operating models, and shared cloud platform services.

  • Expert-level Terraform capability, including module design, reusable patterns, remote state, workspace governance, and CI/CD integration.

  • Strong understanding of cloud architecture, networking, identity and access management, logging, monitoring, security, and operational best practices.

  • Ability to work independently as a self-starter while managing multiple priorities and driving work through ambiguity.

  • Strong communication, documentation, stakeholder management, and presentation skills, including the ability to create and deliver status decks to stakeholder groups.

  • Ability to explain technical platform concepts clearly to both technical stakeholders and business-facing audiences.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset.

  • Experience collaborating across architecture, security, engineering, operations, procurement, vendor, and business teams.

  • Bilingual communication skills are strongly preferred.

Technical Skills

  • AWS Organizations, organizational units, service control policies, account structures, and multi-account governance patterns.

  • Terraform and Terraform Cloud or Terraform Enterprise, including module development, state management, workspace design, policy controls, and pipeline integration.

  • AWS identity, access, and security services such as IAM, IAM Identity Center, CloudTrail, AWS Config, GuardDuty, Security Hub, Systems Manager, and related governance capabilities.

  • AWS networking and connectivity concepts including VPCs, routing, security groups, DNS, private connectivity, VPN, and Direct Connect concepts.

  • CI/CD tooling such as GitHub, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or comparable platforms.

  • Scripting and automation using Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar languages.

  • Monitoring, logging, alerting, observability, and operational reporting for cloud platform services.

  • Cloud cost management, tagging, policy enforcement, configuration standards, and operational control design.

  • Container, Kubernetes, or broader platform engineering experience is considered an asset.

  • The following certifications would be considered an asset but are not required: AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, HashiCorp Terraform Associate or equivalent Terraform certification

  • Additional cloud, security, networking, DevOps, or automation certifications are all considered assets as well but not required.
