What is a remote electrical engineer?

A remote electrical engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and supervises the manufacturing of electrical equipment and systems while working from a location outside a traditional office or on-site setting. Using digital tools and communication platforms, they collaborate with teams, manage projects, and perform technical tasks from home or other remote locations. This role is ideal for those who have strong technical skills, are self-motivated, and can work independently while ensuring that all engineering standards and deadlines are met.

How do remote electrical engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams to ensure successful project delivery?

Remote electrical engineers often use collaboration tools like video conferencing, cloud-based design platforms, and project management software to stay connected with on-site teams. They participate in regular virtual meetings to discuss project updates, resolve technical challenges, and coordinate design changes. Clear communication and detailed documentation are essential to bridging the physical distance, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned on project requirements and timelines. Successfully working remotely in this role requires proactive engagement and strong organizational skills to manage tasks effectively across locations.

General Profile:

Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of electrical engineering expertise, with strong application in cost optimization, supply chain alignment, and product lifecycle improvement.

Interprets internal and external business drivers-including cost, supply risk, manufacturability, and performance-and applies best practices to deliver value-driven engineering solutions.

Solves complex electrical and system-level problems by balancing design intent, reliability, cost, and supply chain considerations. Takes a broad, systems-level perspective to identify innovative and scalable solutions.

Works independently with guidance only in the most complex situations.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Identify, analyze, and resolve complex electrical and electronic issues across systems, subsystems, and components, with emphasis on cost reduction, supply resilience, and reliability
  • Lead or execute value engineering initiatives including cost reduction (CR), multi-sourcing, electrical redesign, and supplier transitions
  • Develop, design, or modify electrical architectures, schematics, PCBAs, harnessing, and power/control systems for complex applications
  • Partner with strategic suppliers to develop, qualify, and optimize electrical components and assemblies, including PCBAs, power supplies, and cable/harness solutions
  • Apply Design for Cost (DfC), Design for Manufacturability (DfM), and Design for Supply Chain (DfSC) principles to electrical designs and assemblies
  • Support and lead ECO evaluation and execution, ensuring design changes deliver cost benefit while managing risk and operational impact
  • Support NPI cost evaluation and design convergence, ensuring electrical designs meet cost, performance, and manufacturability targets
  • Work cross-functionally with Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain Engineering, Program Management, and Manufacturing teams to drive end-to-end value improvements across systems
  • Define, coordinate, and execute electrical testing and validation, including system-level performance, power distribution, grounding/shielding, and reliability testing
  • Perform engineering analysis such as power analysis, signal integrity, thermal-electrical interactions, and component selection optimization
  • Generate and review electrical specifications, test plans, and technical documentation to ensure clarity and alignment across stakeholders
  • Contribute to value tracking activities, including cost savings validation, PPV tracking, and value opportunity identification
  • Communicate complex technical trade-offs (cost, performance, reliability) clearly and influence decisions across engineering and business functions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 7-10 years of experience in electrical engineering, including electronic systems, power systems, or controls
  • Strong experience in areas such as circuit design, PCB layout, power systems, grounding/shielding, and component selection
