What is a remote electrical engineer student?

Remote electrical engineer students are individuals who are studying electrical engineering through online or distance-learning programs instead of attending in-person classes. They participate in virtual lectures, complete assignments online, and may use simulation software to gain practical experience. Remote learning offers flexibility, allowing students to study from anywhere while balancing other commitments such as work or internships. These students often collaborate with peers and instructors through digital platforms and may have opportunities for remote internships or projects with engineering firms.

How do remote electrical engineer student roles typically structure mentorship and support for professional development?

In remote electrical engineering student roles, mentorship and support are often provided through virtual one-on-one meetings, regular check-ins with supervisors, and participation in online team projects. Many organizations use collaboration tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams to facilitate daily communication and encourage questions. Students are frequently paired with experienced engineers who act as mentors, guiding them through technical challenges and helping them set career development goals. This structure ensures that even in a remote setting, students have access to feedback, professional growth opportunities, and a supportive network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote electrical engineer student, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Electrical Engineer Student, you need a solid grasp of electrical engineering fundamentals, strong analytical skills, and enrollment in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with simulation software like MATLAB, AutoCAD, and circuit design tools, as well as experience using online collaboration platforms, is typically expected. Effective time management, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for success in a remote learning environment. These abilities enable students to master complex concepts, collaborate with peers and instructors, and progress efficiently in their engineering studies.

Job description

Guidant Power | Engineering services by Morrow Engineering | Wichita, KS or Colorado Springs, CO | Remote consideredAbout UsGuidant Power delivers electrical safety, reliability, engineering, and training services to leading companies across North America, serving clients in 47 states and counting. Our engineering services are powered by Morrow Engineering, a Guidant Power company providing electrical engineering for industrial power systems since 1986, with over 7,000 studies completed for national clients in food and beverage, manufacturing, energy, data centers, and logistics. You will work alongside Guidant sister companies in arc flash analysis, infrared thermography, and electrical safety training. The RoleThis is an entry level position for a recent graduate or an engineer with one to two years of experience. You will support our Project Engineers on power distribution projects for new installations and retrofits across multiple clients, handling the engineering and design work that keeps those projects moving: building models, running calculations, producing drawings, and collecting field data. You will work under the supervision of senior engineers and licensed PEs while you build the core skills of a power systems consultant. Expect real project work from day one, with a clear path toward independent project responsibility and PE licensure. What You Will Do
  • Provide engineering and design support to Project Engineers on new installation and retrofit projects for multiple clients: models, calculations, drawings, and deliverable preparation
  • Build and update power system models in ETAP, SKM Power*Tools, and EasyPower under senior engineer direction
  • Perform short circuit, protective device coordination, and arc flash calculations per IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E
  • Travel to client facilities to collect equipment data and verify one line accuracy, including energized data collection under NFPA 70E procedures with proper PPE and training (5-15% travel)
  • Create and revise one line diagrams, schematics, and design drawings in AutoCAD
  • Draft study reports and arc flash labels for senior review
  • Participate in internal training on power system fundamentals, study methodology, and electrical safety
What We Are Looking For
  • BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program, power systems coursework preferred
  • Zero to two years of experience; internships and co-ops in power or industrial settings count
  • FE exam passed or scheduled, preferred
  • Exposure to ETAP, SKM Power*Tools, or EasyPower is a plus;
  • Exposure / working knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Solid grasp of three phase power fundamentals: per unit analysis, fault calculations, transformer and motor basics
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and the discipline to document your work
  • Willingness to work in industrial environments and follow site safety requirements
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. and able to pass client background checks
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary ($70k-$85k) and benefits including health insurance, 401(k), and paid time off
  • Full licensure support: FE and PE exam fees, prep materials, and study time
  • A defined growth path from engineer to project ownership, with mentorship from licensed PEs
  • Variety most firms cannot offer: studies, design, and field work across national clients and industries
