A Remote Electrical AutoCAD professional is a specialist who uses AutoCAD software to design, draft, and document electrical systems and layouts for buildings or projects, while working from a remote location. Their tasks typically include creating wiring diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, and other technical drawings required for electrical installations. These professionals collaborate with engineers, architects, and project managers through digital communication tools to ensure accurate and up-to-date designs. Working remotely allows them to serve clients or employers from anywhere, providing flexibility and access to a broader range of projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote electrical AutoCAD designer?

To thrive as a Remote Electrical AutoCAD Designer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering concepts, technical drawing, and proficiency in AutoCAD software, typically supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with electrical codes, CAD standards, and software versions such as AutoCAD Electrical is essential. Attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills for remote collaboration and project accuracy. Both roles are remote and use Autocad, but the Autocad role involves more technical and design responsibilities, while the draftsman role centers on drafting tasks.

What are some common challenges faced by remote electrical AutoCAD professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Electrical AutoCAD professionals often encounter challenges such as clear communication with project teams, managing version control for drawings, and staying updated on project changes. To address these, it's important to establish regular virtual meetings, use cloud-based collaboration tools for file sharing and feedback, and maintain detailed documentation of revisions. Proactively seeking clarification and participating in team discussions can also ensure alignment and minimize errors in deliverables.

The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking an electrical engineer to join our wind and solar collection team. In this hybrid role, you will support the power delivery team, working with multidisciplinary project teams providing electrical engineering and related technical expertise. The person in this position will also be responsible for managing projects, coaching and mentoring less-experienced staff, providing technical leadership, and managing teams to meet clients' needs.

A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The ideal candidate for this position is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their technical ability and project management expertise for a variety of projects. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: prepare designs for DC and AC collection systems and power plant controllers. Projects will focus on design and analysis and will include preparing plans and specifications, writing reports, and developing cost estimations. The work will be related to renewable energy facilities.

  • Project management: proposal development including defining work scopes, deliverables, schedules, and budget. Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to team members and clients.

  • Staff development: support the growth and development of team members.

  • Collaboration: build and sustain strong relationships with clients and internal teams. Collaborate across disciplines to align technical approaches with client goals while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

  • Experience:

    • At least 5 years of related experience working in a design capacity on projects directly related to job responsibilities described above.

    • Knowledge and experience with solar DC and AC solar collection system design.

    • Experience with power plant controllers.

    • Working knowledge of codes, standards, laws, and regulations applicable to the project assignments described above.

  • Licenses/certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within one year.

  • Software: Microsoft Office.

  • Driver's license: Possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • 10+ years of related experience.

  • Experience with collection system studies, including ampacity, short circuit, reactive power, grounding, insulation coordination, harmonic, and transient overvoltage.

  • Experience with energy storage facilities.

  • Authoritative capabilities and experience applying industry-standard resource modeling and assessment techniques (PVsyst, Windographer, etc.).

  • Experience with statistical analysis of solar and wind data, resource and net energy production forecasts (including uncertainty/variability analysis and loss assumptions), design, site conditions, and technology suitability.

  • Experience with data collection, post-construction measurement campaigns (including power performance testing), and project contracts.

  • Experience with AutoCAD.

About the opportunity

A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers working primarily from a home office.
