Remote Electric Vehicle Design primarily involves creating the visual and functional concepts of electric vehicles, emphasizing aesthetics and user experience. In contrast, Remote Electric Vehicle Engineering focuses on technical development, system integration, and ensuring vehicle performance. Both roles often collaborate but require different skill sets and certifications, making them distinct yet complementary in the EV industry.

What are some common challenges faced when working on electric vehicle design projects remotely, and how can they be addressed?

Remote electric vehicle (EV) design teams often encounter challenges related to communication, collaboration on complex designs, and access to physical prototypes or testing equipment. These can be addressed by leveraging advanced CAD and simulation software, maintaining regular virtual meetings for project updates, and using collaborative platforms to share and review design files. Successful remote teams also establish clear workflows and documentation standards to ensure everyone stays aligned. Building strong communication channels with both engineering and cross-functional teams is key to overcoming these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Electric Vehicle Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Electric Vehicle Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical or electrical engineering, proficiency in CAD software, and a solid understanding of EV systems and standards. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB/Simulink, and certifications in automotive or EV-specific technologies are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for effective remote teamwork and innovative design. These competencies ensure efficient development of cutting-edge, safe, and reliable electric vehicles in a distributed work environment.

What is a Remote Electric Vehicle Design job?

A Remote Electric Vehicle (EV) Design job involves working from a location outside of a traditional office to develop, model, and improve electric vehicles and their components. Professionals in this field use digital tools and engineering software to design battery systems, drivetrains, and vehicle architectures, collaborating virtually with teams to innovate and solve technical challenges. This role requires knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering principles, as well as experience with CAD or simulation software. The remote nature of the position allows for flexibility and often involves frequent communication with global teams.

Job description

Job Description
We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.
Ford's Electric Vehicles, Digital and Design (EVDD) team is charged with delivering the company's vision of a fully electric transportation future. EVDD is customer-obsessed, entrepreneurial, and data-driven and is dedicated to delivering industry-leading customer experience for electric vehicle buyers and owners. You'll join an agile team of doers pioneering our EV future by working collaboratively, staying focused on only what matters, and delivering excellence day in and day out. Join us to make positive changes by helping build a better world where every person is free to move and pursue their dreams.
Responsibilities
You'll have true endtoend ownership-designing, building, deploying, and operating scalable microservices on modern cloud infrastructure like Kubernetes and AWS/GCP. If you want your work to run on a global scale, have realworld impact, and are up to the challenge of enterprise-level complexity, this is a chance to build technology that literally moves the world.
  • Unrivaled Scale & Real-World Impact (The "Cool Factor"): Many companies talk about "scale," but few can match the physical and digital footprint of Ford. In this role, your code will power the Ford Connected Vehicle Cloud Platform, which connects over 26 million vehicles worldwide (and counting).

  • Modern Tech Stack & True End-to-End Ownership: This isn't a maintenance job for a legacy monolith. You will be building and operating cutting-edge, cloud-native architectures using a modern stack: Java, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, Kafka, and multi-cloud environments (AWS & GCP).

  • Startup Culture with Enterprise-Grade Stability & Benefits: As part of the Electric Vehicles, Digital and Design (EVDD) team, you get the best of both worlds: the fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and customer-obsessed culture of a tech startup, backed by the robust financial stability and world-class benefits of a global giant.

Qualifications
What you'll do...
  • Architect & Code: Design, develop, maintain, and support multiple mission-critical cloud platform components and APIs that power Ford's connected vehicle ecosystem.

  • Own End-to-End Delivery: Take ownership of software services from initial design to deployment and production operations on modern cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP & Kubernetes).

  • Scale & Optimize: Build high-performance, resilient, and event-driven microservices capable of handling massive, real-time data streams.

  • Drive Engineering Excellence: Champion clean code, Test-Driven Development (TDD), robust API design, and comprehensive load/performance testing to ensure ultra-high reliability.

  • Collaborate & Innovate: Partner closely with product managers, technical leaders, and cross-functional teams in an agile environment to translate complex requirements into production-ready solutions.

  • Monitor & Maintain: Implement proactive monitoring, alerting, and performance-management strategies to ensure system health and adhere to strict SLAs.

You'll have...
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • Experience: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, developing, and operating high-performance, cloud-based platforms and microservices.

  • Core Tech Stack: 5+ years in roles requiring proven expertise in Java and Spring Boot.

  • Cloud & Containers: 5+ years in roles hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures (AWS or GCP) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).

  • Data & Messaging: 5+ years' experience building event-driven systems using Kafka (or cloud equivalents like Pub/Sub) and working with relational/non-relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).

  • DevOps & CI/CD: 5+ years demonstrating technical proficiency with modern DevOps tools and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub, ArgoCD, SonarQube) to ensure secure and efficient delivery.

  • Testing & Quality: 5+ years' experience in roles demonstrating a strong commitment to writing clean, maintainable code with experience in TDD and API performance/load testing.

Even better, you may have...
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.

  • Experience with advanced GCP/AWS cloud-native tools (e.g., Cloud Run, Spanner, Cloud Functions, Cloud Scheduler, GKE/EKS, Terraform).

  • Deep understanding of API gateway technologies (e.g., Apigee, Tyk) and protocols (gRPC, WebSockets, REST, JSON).

  • Experience with GitOps and advanced deployment strategies (e.g., Canary deployments, Tekton, ArgoCD).

  • Experience supporting critical, "always-on" applications in high-throughput, low-latency production environments.

  • Ability to make data-informed architectural decisions, even when dealing with imperfect or incomplete data.

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
โ€ข Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
โ€ข Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
โ€ข Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
โ€ข Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
โ€ข Tuition assistance
โ€ข Established and active employee resource groups
โ€ข Paid time off for individual and team community service
โ€ข A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
โ€ข Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time.
