Overview

The Underwriter 1 position is responsible for working with their Team Leader, Underwriters 2-4, Data Consultants, Account Managers, Producers, and Clients in preparing requests for proposals, obtaining, and analyzing carrier quotes, inputting, and analyzing data from various automation systems, and maintaining a small book of business. It also works collaboratively with the underwriting and data teams to perform financial and data analysis of a client’s healthcare plans.

This role is primarily remote. However, for candidates who reside within a reasonable commuting distance of our Louisville, KY office, a hybrid work arrangement would be preferred.


How you'll make an impact
  • Execute competitive bidding of all employee benefits coverage lines.
  • Prepare PowerPoints outlining financial and contractual analysis according to company policy.
  • Review vendor proposals for accuracy.
  • Assist Underwriters 2-4 and Data Consultants to evaluate, determine, and recommend alternative coverages, pricing, options, and plan design changes based on analysis of available plan elements and on client/prospect goals.
  • Produce deliverables timely, accurately, and in compliance with company standards.
  • Work jointly with Underwriters 2-4 to forecast and develop projections.
  • Maintain positive relationships with vendor representatives.
  • Remain abreast of the health insurance environment and constantly changing insurance legislation.
  • Respond to routine and non-routine correspondence.
  • Work independently and within the team on special nonrecurring and ongoing projects.
  • Represent Gallagher positively and professionally with both internal and external Clients.
  • Maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

About You

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree and 0-3 years related experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications – excel proficiency is a must.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows applications and Microsoft Office.

Preferred:

  • Must obtain Accident & Health License within the first 6 months of employment, if not already licensed.  
  • Strong employee benefits knowledge and/or math, economics, and finance background .
  • Strong PC skills with the aptitude to learn new systems.
