What is a Remote Drilling Rig?

A remote drilling rig is a type of drilling equipment operated from a distance, often using advanced technologies such as automation, robotics, and remote monitoring systems. These rigs are commonly used in the oil and gas industry to drill wells in locations that are difficult or hazardous for humans to access directly. Remote operation enhances safety, efficiency, and productivity by reducing the need for onsite personnel and allowing real-time monitoring and control from centralized locations. This technology is especially valuable in offshore, deepwater, or environmentally sensitive areas. As digital solutions advance, remote drilling rigs are becoming increasingly common in modern drilling operations.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on:

RC rigs (Schramm 685/450, Foremost Explorer 1500, etc.)

Diamond/Sonic rigs (Diedrich, Boart, TSI150 CC, etc.)

Air systems: 900/350s, boosters, rotary screw compressors

Diesel engines (CAT, Cummins, Detroit)

Hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, and controls

Conduct scheduled services and preventative maintenance using MaintainX workflows.

Support field supervisors in troubleshooting real-time breakdowns to minimize downtime.

Maintain accurate service logs, parts usage, and field repair notes.

Work safely in MSHA-regulated mine environments.

Assist with rig moves, inspections, and pre-deployment mechanical checks.

Communicate clearly with supervisors, rig managers, and parts/purchasing personnel.

Participate in safety meetings and contribute to continuous improvement.

Other duties as required.

Job Requirements:

5+ years experience as a heavy-duty mechanic, rig mechanic, or drill mechanic (required).

Proven experience working on RC and/or Diamond/Core rigs (required).

Strong understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

Experience with diesel engines and air compressors common to drilling.

Ability to fabricate, weld, and perform field-fit repairs is an asset.

MSHA 5000-23 (or willingness to obtain before deployment).

Valid drivers license (CDL is an asset).

Ability to work on remote mine sites and travel as required.
