Remote development refers to the practice of software development where developers work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. This setup is enabled by various collaboration tools, cloud services, and version control systems that allow teams to communicate and manage code remotely. Remote development offers flexibility, can improve work-life balance, and allows companies to tap into a global talent pool. However, it also requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to ensure productivity and team cohesion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote developer?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with relevant coding languages, often supported by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, collaborative platforms such as GitHub or Jira, and remote communication tools like Slack or Zoom is essential. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication help remote developers stand out. These skills ensure productivity, effective teamwork, and reliable project delivery in a distributed work environment.

How do remote development teams typically collaborate and stay aligned on projects?

Remote development teams usually rely on a combination of project management tools, version control systems, and regular virtual meetings to stay connected and aligned. Communication platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams, along with daily stand-ups and sprint planning sessions, help ensure everyone is updated on progress and blockers. Code repositories such as GitHub or GitLab facilitate collaborative coding, while documentation tools keep information accessible. Effective remote collaboration often requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to manage tasks independently while staying engaged with the team.

Job description

Intelligence Business Development Manager
Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia (Remote)
Salary Range: $80,000 – $120,000 per year
Position Overview
Our client, a professional services organization supporting government and defense programs, is seeking an Intelligence Business Development Manager for a remote, permanent position aligned to Fredericksburg, Virginia. The role drives capture and growth across the intelligence community market.
This position suits someone who understands both the intelligence mission and how government business is actually won. It combines relationship building, opportunity identification, and disciplined capture work, with the autonomy that comes with a remote appointment.
Key Responsibilities
You will identify, qualify, and pursue new business opportunities across intelligence community and defense customers, building and maintaining a pipeline that reflects realistic probability rather than optimism.
You will lead capture activity on targeted opportunities, developing win strategies, shaping requirements with customers where appropriate and permissible, analyzing competitors, and assembling the teaming arrangements that strengthen the bid.
You will build and sustain relationships with government customers, prime contractors, and teaming partners, representing the organization credibly at industry events, conferences, and customer engagements.
You will drive proposal efforts in coordination with proposal, technical, contracts, and pricing staff, contributing win themes and solution narrative, reviewing drafts for responsiveness, and ensuring submissions meet solicitation requirements. You will also maintain market intelligence and provide leadership with accurate pipeline and forecast reporting.
You will maintain disciplined opportunity qualification, applying consistent bid and no-bid criteria so that effort concentrates on winnable pursuits, and you will conduct honest post-award reviews on both wins and losses to feed what is learned back into future capture strategy.
Requirements
Prior business development or capture experience in the government contracting sector is required, with a demonstrated record of contributing to won opportunities.
Working knowledge of the intelligence community market and its customers, contract vehicles, and acquisition processes is required, along with familiarity with the federal procurement lifecycle from opportunity identification through award.
An active security clearance, or eligibility to obtain one, is required for this role, and United States citizenship is required. Excellent written and verbal communication, strong relationship-building skill, and the self-direction to work effectively in a remote position are essential.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior military or intelligence community service is strongly preferred, bringing both mission understanding and customer credibility.
Experience with formal capture methodologies such as Shipley, familiarity with GWACs and IDIQ vehicles, an established network across intelligence customers and industry partners, and a bachelor's degree in business, national security studies, or a related field are all advantageous.
Experience with small business set-aside strategies, joint ventures, or mentor-protégé arrangements is advantageous. Candidates who bring an existing pipeline or established teaming relationships, and who are comfortable operating with limited supervision in a remote role, will be particularly effective.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a permanent, full-time position with a salary range of $80,000 to $120,000 per year, based on experience, clearance level, and demonstrated capture record.
The position is remote, offering genuine location flexibility, though periodic travel to customer sites, industry events, and the Fredericksburg area should be expected. You will have real ownership of a growth area within an established organization, in a market where a strong capture record translates directly into career opportunity.
This is a contract engagement placed through our recruiting team. We work closely with our contract professionals throughout the assignment, from onboarding and first-week check-ins through to end-of-contract planning, and we actively look for the next opportunity for people who deliver well. Many of our contract placements lead to extensions, repeat assignments, or permanent conversion.
We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. Reasonable accommodations are available during the application and interview process on request. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the engagement.
