Job description

Company Introduction: TSMC Design Technology Canada Inc. (OTTAWA)  (TDTC)

Immerse yourself in cutting-edge circuit R&D at TSMC Design Technology Canada, Inc. (TDTC), a proud part of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC)-a pioneer in the semiconductor foundry industry since 1987. Located in Kanata, Ottawa's thriving high-tech region, TDTC has been driving advancements in semiconductor process technologies since its inception in 2007. Our areas of expertise include Memory Compilers, High-Speed IOs, BIST/DFT, and Test-Chip design and layout. We invite passionate innovators to join us in our pursuit of excellence and help redefine the boundaries of technology development in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Overview of Role

We're looking for a highly motivated Senior HPC & IT Systems Engineer to be the IT expert for our office in Ottawa, Ontario. This key role ensures seamless remote access for world-class engineers and contributes directly to our central data center infrastructure. You'll manage local IT support and drive significant system administration projects for our ultra-large scale High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments. If you thrive in a fast-paced R&D setting with complex IT systems, EDA tools, and cloud computing, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • HPC & Cloud System Administration: Manage our large-scale HPC farm (Cloud/On-Premises), including Linux clusters, virtualization, EDA tools, license services, and high-speed NAS storage.
  • Remote Access & Performance: Ensure engineers have optimal and reliable remote access to corporate data centers, troubleshooting network, display, and client-side issues.
  • Data Center Infrastructure: Administer core Linux engineering environments within our data centers:
    • Workload Management: Administer and troubleshoot LSF clusters (queues, priorities, host loadings).
    • Enterprise Storage: Manage NetApp storage systems (volumes, performance, capacity planning).
    • Linux & Deployment: Manage Red Hat Linux OS images, automated deployments (Kickstart), and directory service migrations (NIS to LDAP).
    • Virtualization: Manage and support virtualization platforms (VMware, etc.).
  • EDA Environment Optimization: Analyze and resolve performance issues related to EDA tools by identifying root causes in the underlying IT infrastructure (OS, LSF, storage, network).
  • IT Support & Security: Provide Tier 1/2 technical support for R&D engineers, manage local hardware/network, and ensure robust security and policy adherence.
  • Project Management & Collaboration: Lead IT projects for internal/external users, act as the primary IT liaison, and collaborate with global IT teams.
  • Innovation: Research and implement new technologies to enhance our IT systems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in CS, CE, EE, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years in IT support, systems administration, and infrastructure engineering, ideally in R&D/HPC.
  • Expert-level Linux administration (Red Hat preferred), with advanced scripting (Python, Perl, Shell).
  • Extensive experience with HPC workload managers (e.g., LSF).
  • Deep expertise in enterprise storage administration (e.g., NetApp).
  • Proven experience with high-performance remote desktop/visualization solutions and WAN network optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience with system deployment, OS image management, and directory services (NIS/LDAP).
  • Solid experience with virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware).
  • Strong understanding of EDA tool ecosystems, design flows, and licensing.
  • Experience with design data management systems.
  • Strong network fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, firewalls) and hardware troubleshooting.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated, high integrity, and results oriented.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specific experience supporting the IC design community, understanding their unique computational and graphic demands.
  • Relevant industry certifications highly valued (e.g., RHCE/A, VCP, NCDA, LSF Admin).
  • Familiarity with Cloud environment management (AWS, Azure, GCP) and experience with infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools like Ansible or Terraform.
  • Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of monitoring and logging systems (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack).
  • Understanding of ITIL or similar service management frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Large Language Model (LLM) concepts and their potential applications in an R&D context.
  • Fluent in both Mandarin and English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
