What is a remote design engineer?

A Remote Design Engineer is a professional who creates and develops product designs, systems, or structures while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with teams via digital communication tools. Remote Design Engineers can work in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, and are responsible for turning ideas into detailed technical plans. This role requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently. By working remotely, they can contribute to projects from virtually anywhere in the world.

What does a remote design engineer do?

Remote design engineers work from home or a remote office, and depending on their specialty, may have a wide range of duties and responsibilities. For instance, as an electrical engineer, you use specialized tools and software to design and plan electrical systems, ranging from computer hardware to wide power grids. As an automotive design engineer, you translate ideas and consumer needs into usable products, or may even work on a team to design an entire vehicle line. As an industrial design engineer, you may assist in the development of consumer products, ranging from everything from kitchen gadgets to smartphones to modern furniture. In all cases, you work with a team of other designers and engineers, each contributing expertise to create a final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote design engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and collaborative project management platforms is typically required, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) where applicable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering accurate designs, meeting deadlines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

How do remote design engineers effectively collaborate with teams across different time zones?

Remote Design Engineers often work with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders from various locations, making clear communication and effective collaboration essential. They typically use digital tools like project management platforms, video conferencing, and shared design software to synchronize work and provide updates. To overcome time zone differences, teams may schedule regular check-ins during overlapping hours and establish clear documentation practices so everyone stays informed. Being proactive in communication and flexible with meeting times can greatly improve teamwork and project success.

Can remote design engineers work remotely?

Remote design engineers can work remotely if their employer allows it, and they have the necessary skills in CAD software and communication tools. Many companies offer remote positions for design engineers, especially with experience in virtual collaboration and project management. However, some roles may require on-site presence for testing or manufacturing coordination.

Job Description

ROLE SUMMARY

We are hiring a Technical Fellow, Software to serve as a senior technical authority for the Kepware industrial connectivity platform. This individual contributor role is accountable for architectural integrity, technical direction, and the resolution of the most complex engineering challenges across Kepware core platform engineering.

The Technical Fellow partners with Engineering, Architecture, Product, and Quality to shape technology strategy, guide major design decisions, and raise engineering standards across distributed teams. This role is critical to delivering reliable, scalable industrial connectivity software at the center of the Velotic portfolio and will be responsible for setting technical direction for the Kepware platform and core connectivity stack, leading architecture for high-complexity initiatives, and mentoring senior engineers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Own technical vision and architecture: define and maintain architectural direction for the Kepware platform, ensuring design integrity across modules, releases, and integration points with adjacent Velotic products (ThingWorx, Proficy).

• Lead on the hardest problems: decompose complex requirements into implementable designs; evaluate tradeoffs; drive performance, scalability, security, and reliability improvements for mission-critical industrial connectivity software.

• Shape product and platform direction: partner with Product Management and Architecture to translate business goals into technical strategy; contribute to Kepware roadmaps, modernization efforts, and platform consolidation initiatives.

• Deliver through others: provide technical leadership on large initiatives without direct people-management responsibility; guide design and implementation across engineering teams, including distributed and consultant-augmented teams.

• Set the engineering standard: lead design and code reviews; model disciplined software development practices; define patterns, standards, and quality bars that other engineers follow.

• Mentor and elevate talent: coach senior and principal-level engineers on architecture, troubleshooting, and technical decision-making; share knowledge through documentation, colloquia, and technical forums.

• Represent Velotic technically: engage credibly with customers, support, services, and executive stakeholders on complex Kepware technical issues; communicate technology choices to technical and non-technical audiences.

• Evaluate and adopt technology: monitor industry trends (cloud, edge, AI-assisted development, industrial connectivity, OT/IT integration); assess emerging technologies and recommend adoption where they advance the Kepware platform strategy.

• Own technical accountability: take responsibility for the technical quality of what ships in owned areas, including maintainability, operability, and alignment with security and compliance requirements.

• Ensure compliance with company standards and policies.

• Deep hands-on engineering capability; able to engage credibly in design reviews, debugging, and performance analysis.

• Experience leading technical work across geographically distributed engineering teams.

• Experience influencing technical direction across teams or functions; recognized internally as a subject matter expert.

• Excellent communication skills; able to explain complex technical concepts to engineering peers, product stakeholders, and senior leadership.

• Demonstrated ability to operate with autonomy in ambiguous, high-stakes environments.

• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for complex production issues spanning application software, integrations, operating systems, and networks.
