What is a remote design engineer?

A Remote Design Engineer is a professional who creates and develops product designs, systems, or structures while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with teams via digital communication tools. Remote Design Engineers can work in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, and are responsible for turning ideas into detailed technical plans. This role requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently. By working remotely, they can contribute to projects from virtually anywhere in the world.

What does a remote design engineer do?

Remote design engineers work from home or a remote office, and depending on their specialty, may have a wide range of duties and responsibilities. For instance, as an electrical engineer, you use specialized tools and software to design and plan electrical systems, ranging from computer hardware to wide power grids. As an automotive design engineer, you translate ideas and consumer needs into usable products, or may even work on a team to design an entire vehicle line. As an industrial design engineer, you may assist in the development of consumer products, ranging from everything from kitchen gadgets to smartphones to modern furniture. In all cases, you work with a team of other designers and engineers, each contributing expertise to create a final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote design engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and collaborative project management platforms is typically required, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) where applicable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering accurate designs, meeting deadlines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

How do remote design engineers effectively collaborate with teams across different time zones?

Remote Design Engineers often work with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders from various locations, making clear communication and effective collaboration essential. They typically use digital tools like project management platforms, video conferencing, and shared design software to synchronize work and provide updates. To overcome time zone differences, teams may schedule regular check-ins during overlapping hours and establish clear documentation practices so everyone stays informed. Being proactive in communication and flexible with meeting times can greatly improve teamwork and project success.

Can remote design engineers work remotely?

Remote design engineers can work remotely if their employer allows it, and they have the necessary skills in CAD software and communication tools. Many companies offer remote positions for design engineers, especially with experience in virtual collaboration and project management. However, some roles may require on-site presence for testing or manufacturing coordination.

Job description

Bleeding Edge Ohio Based Technology Firm, Newly Created Role, Tremendous Growth Opportunity: You will serve as the solo ASIC Design Engineer owning architecture, transistor‐level design, simulation, verification, and delivery of custom ASICs focused on power/voltage conversion, battery‐powered systems, and pure analog circuitry. This role also requires meaningful experience with solid‐state fabrication, semiconductor process flows, and device‐level considerations that directly influence analog/power IC performance.

Core Responsibilities

  • Analog & Power ASIC Design: Own full transistor-level lifecycle (architecture to tape-out) with required expertise in pure analog design. Design power conversion circuits—including buck/boost converters, charge pumps, battery management ICs, low/high-voltage stages, and switching/linear regulators.
  • IP Development: Develop analog/power IP blocks (biasing networks, references, amplifiers, drivers, protection circuits). Run SPICE, corner, Monte Carlo, aging, and reliability simulations.
  • Layout & Fab Interaction: Drive floorplanning, parasitic extraction, matching, and PDK usage. Integrate device physics, doping profiles, oxide variations, high-voltage structures, thermal behavior, and isolation (trench, SOI, guard rings). Evaluate process variation impacts on analog stability and noise.
  • Project Ownership: Act as the sole ASIC engineer leading technical strategy, cross-functional integration (PCB, packaging, test), and documentation.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Education & Experience: BS/MS in EE, CE, or Physics; 8+ years in transistor-level ASIC/Analog IC design as a sole project lead.
  • Pure Analog Expertise: deep experience in pure analog design—transistor-level design, compensation, stability, noise, and biasing—alongside power-conversion and battery-powered architectures.
  • Tools: Hands-on proficiency with Cadence (Virtuoso, Spectre, ADE).
  • Semiconductor Physics & Fab: Deep understanding of CMOS/BiCMOS flows, device physics, high-voltage structures, fabrication constraints (implantation, oxidation, lithography), and reliability (BTI, HCI, TDDB).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Silicon debug, bench validation, and lab bring-up experience.
  • Background in wearables, IoT, battery-powered embedded systems, or wide-bandgap devices (GaN, SiC).
  • Familiarity with mixed-signal verification methodologies.
  • BS or MS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics or a related area.

Very Competitive Compensation and Benefits, Call or Apply Today!

Note: we can consider on-site (relocation assistance is offered), hybrid or remote employees who can travel to HQ as needed.
