What Does a Remote Design Engineer Do?

Remote design engineers work from home or a remote office, and depending on their specialty, may have a wide range of duties and responsibilities. For instance, as an electrical engineer, you use specialized tools and software to design and plan electrical systems, ranging from computer hardware to wide power grids. As an automotive design engineer, you translate ideas and consumer needs into usable products, or may even work on a team to design an entire vehicle line. As an industrial design engineer, you may assist in the development of consumer products, ranging from everything from kitchen gadgets to smartphones to modern furniture. In all cases, you work with a team of other designers and engineers, each contributing expertise to create a final product.

What is a Remote Design Engineer?

A Remote Design Engineer is a professional who creates and develops product designs, systems, or structures while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with teams via digital communication tools. Remote Design Engineers can work in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, and are responsible for turning ideas into detailed technical plans. This role requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently. By working remotely, they can contribute to projects from virtually anywhere in the world.

How do Remote Design Engineers effectively collaborate with teams across different time zones?

Remote Design Engineers often work with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders from various locations, making clear communication and effective collaboration essential. They typically use digital tools like project management platforms, video conferencing, and shared design software to synchronize work and provide updates. To overcome time zone differences, teams may schedule regular check-ins during overlapping hours and establish clear documentation practices so everyone stays informed. Being proactive in communication and flexible with meeting times can greatly improve teamwork and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and collaborative project management platforms is typically required, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) where applicable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering accurate designs, meeting deadlines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

Job description

We are looking for the right people - people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.

About the Role

Halliburton is building a next-generation user experience platform to unify design, engineering, and intelligent systems across a global portfolio of enterprise applications.

This platform extends beyond a traditional design system. It establishes a scalable foundation for UI development across multiple frameworks, while enabling AI-assisted and AI-generated interfaces that remain consistent, governed, and production-ready.

We are seeking a Design Systems Engineer to define and scale this foundation. You will architect how design tokens, components, and interaction models flow from design tools into production code-and how emerging AI systems integrate into that pipeline.

This role sits at the intersection of frontend engineering, design systems, and AI-enabled development. We are intentionally looking for candidates who can bridge these domains.

Job Duties
  • Architect and maintain the end-to-end design system pipeline (design tokens code production)
  • Build and scale design token infrastructure, including transformation, versioning, and distribution
  • Develop integrations between design tools, codebases, and AI-assisted tooling
  • Define and implement systems for AI-generated UI, ensuring outputs align with system standards and production requirements
  • Integrate tools such as Claude, Figma AI capabilities, and code generation systems into workflows
  • Build and maintain automation pipelines (CI/CD) for:
    • Token synchronization
    • Component publishing
    • System validation and regression detection
  • Enable multi-framework support (Angular, React, and others) through shared architecture
  • Develop internal tooling (CLI, APIs, IDE integrations) to improve developer experience
  • Establish mechanisms to ensure design, code, and AI outputs remain aligned over time
  • Partner closely with designers and engineers to evolve the platform based on real product usage
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field-or equivalent practical experience
  • 6-10+ years of experience in frontend engineering, design systems, or platform development
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frameworks (React and/or Angular)
  • Demonstrated experience building or contributing to design systems, token architectures, or UI platforms
  • Experience working with scalable systems, APIs, or automation pipelines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Figma APIs, plugins, or design tooling ecosystems
  • Experience building internal platforms, developer tooling, or system infrastructure
  • Familiarity with multi-framework UI architecture
  • Experience collaborating deeply with both design and engineering teams
AI & Emerging Technology Experience
  • Experience using or integrating LLMs (e.g., Claude, GPT) into development or design workflows
  • Understanding of how to structure systems for AI-assisted or AI-generated UI
  • Ability to design guardrails, validation layers, and synchronization mechanisms for AI-generated outputs
  • Hands-on experience or strong interest in emerging tools for generative design and development

What Sets You Apart

  • Ability to operate comfortably across design and engineering domains
  • Experience building design-to-code pipelines at scale
  • Strong systems thinking and ability to connect tools, workflows, and platforms
  • Curiosity and initiative in exploring new technologies and ways of working
Additional Information

We welcome candidates from both engineering and design backgrounds who have developed strong technical expertise in design systems, tooling, and frontend development. This role requires the ability to bridge disciplines and build systems that scale across teams and technologies.
