What does a remote design engineer do?

Remote design engineers work from home or a remote office, and depending on their specialty, may have a wide range of duties and responsibilities. For instance, as an electrical engineer, you use specialized tools and software to design and plan electrical systems, ranging from computer hardware to wide power grids. As an automotive design engineer, you translate ideas and consumer needs into usable products, or may even work on a team to design an entire vehicle line. As an industrial design engineer, you may assist in the development of consumer products, ranging from everything from kitchen gadgets to smartphones to modern furniture. In all cases, you work with a team of other designers and engineers, each contributing expertise to create a final product.

What is a remote design engineer?

A Remote Design Engineer is a professional who creates and develops product designs, systems, or structures while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with teams via digital communication tools. Remote Design Engineers can work in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, and are responsible for turning ideas into detailed technical plans. This role requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently. By working remotely, they can contribute to projects from virtually anywhere in the world.

How do remote design engineers effectively collaborate with teams across different time zones?

Remote Design Engineers often work with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders from various locations, making clear communication and effective collaboration essential. They typically use digital tools like project management platforms, video conferencing, and shared design software to synchronize work and provide updates. To overcome time zone differences, teams may schedule regular check-ins during overlapping hours and establish clear documentation practices so everyone stays informed. Being proactive in communication and flexible with meeting times can greatly improve teamwork and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote design engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and collaborative project management platforms is typically required, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) where applicable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering accurate designs, meeting deadlines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

BIM & Design Coordination Lead - Job Description

Improve Group is seeking an experienced BIM professional to join our team in the newly created role of BIM & Design Coordination Lead. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of how we design, coordinate, and deliver innovative construction projects. The BIM & Design Coordination Lead will help the design team translate client goals and project requirements into coordinated Building Information Models (BIM), technical drawings, and integrated design solutions that support successful project delivery.

As part of a fast-growing company that seamlessly integrates architecture, prefabrication, manufacturing, and construction, you will play a key role in developing standardized BIM workflows, advancing design coordination, and optimizing our project delivery processes. You will serve as the organization's BIM subject matter expert, helping teams leverage technology to improve collaboration, quality, constructability, and efficiency across every phase of a project.

Working collaboratively with architects, project managers, superintendents, estimators, and engineering partners, this role contributes throughout the entire project lifecycle-from programming and conceptual design through construction administration. The BIM & Design Coordination Lead develops coordinated Revit models, construction documentation, and design solutions that support commercial, federal, and modular building projects while helping improve project quality, constructability, and overall client outcomes.

This position is primarily based in our Albuquerque, New Mexico office with a hybrid work schedule available following onboarding. Exceptional candidates may be considered for an approved remote work arrangement within the United States, with the expectation of spending approximately one week per month in our Albuquerque office. Occasional travel to project sites, client meetings, and company events may be required (up to 20%).

Roles and Responsibilities

BIM Design & Project Development

  • Develop coordinated Building Information Models utilizing Revit throughout all phases of design.
  • Prepare accurate construction drawings, details, schedules, and project documentation.
  • Translate project programming, client requirements, and design intent into coordinated technical solutions.
  • Support projects from programming through construction administration while maintaining consistency across project documentation.
  • Assist in developing modular, prefabricated, and standardized building solutions that support Improve Group's integrated delivery approach.

Project Coordination

    • Collaborate closely with architects, project managers, estimators, superintendents, and engineering consultants throughout project development.
    • Coordinate architectural models with structural, mechanical, electrical, and specialty disciplines.
    • Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and coordination sessions.
    • Identify conflicts, inconsistencies, or constructability concerns while assisting project teams in developing practical solutions.

Construction Documentation

      • Produce high-quality drawing packages supporting schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting, bidding, and construction administration.
      • Maintain drawing accuracy, organization, and consistency across multiple active projects.
      • Assist in developing project details, assemblies, schedules, and technical documentation.
      • Support revisions throughout the design and construction process.

BIM Standards & Continuous Improvement

    • Help maintain Improve Group's BIM standards, templates, project libraries, and modeling best practices.
    • Support development of standardized Revit families, assemblies, and digital resources.
    • Contribute ideas that improve design workflows, production efficiency, and project quality.
    • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen collaboration between design and construction teams.

OMEGA Platform Support

    • Support ongoing development of Improve Group's OMEGA product platform through creation of standardized BIM content and building assemblies.
