Remote Databricks Developer information

What is a remote Databricks developer?

A Remote Databricks Developer is a software professional who specializes in building, managing, and optimizing data pipelines and analytics workflows on the Databricks platform, while working from a remote location. They use Databricks, which is based on Apache Spark, to process large datasets, develop ETL processes, implement machine learning models, and collaborate with data teams. Their responsibilities often include writing code in languages like Python, Scala, or SQL, integrating with cloud services, and ensuring data quality and security. Working remotely, they communicate with teams online and use cloud-based tools to complete their tasks efficiently.

How does a remote Databricks developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams while working from different locations?

Remote Databricks Developers often work closely with data engineers, data scientists, and business analysts through virtual collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and Zoom. Since team members may be distributed across various time zones, clear communication, regular stand-up meetings, and thorough documentation are essential for ensuring alignment on project goals and deadlines. Developers are also expected to participate in code reviews and shared knowledge sessions to maintain coding standards and support a collaborative environment. This structure helps ensure that complex data solutions are delivered efficiently and meet business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Databricks developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Databricks Developer, you need strong expertise in data engineering, programming languages like Python or Scala, and experience with big data frameworks, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with Databricks platform, Apache Spark, cloud services (such as AWS or Azure), and relevant certifications like Databricks Certified Associate Developer are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities ensure efficient development, scalable data solutions, and effective teamwork in distributed environments.

What is the difference between Remote Databricks Developer vs Data Engineer?

AspectRemote Databricks DeveloperData Engineer

While both roles involve working with data and cloud platforms, a Remote Databricks Developer specializes in developing solutions within the Databricks environment, focusing on Spark and data analytics. A Data Engineer has a broader scope, designing and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure across various platforms. The roles overlap in skills like SQL and cloud knowledge, but their primary focus and tools differ.

Job description

Software Engineer, AI Agents (Product-Minded LLM / Agentic Systems)

Location: Remote (North America)
Compensation: $180,000–$320,000 base (location-independent) + equity
Contact / Apply: aidan@nxtlevel.io

About Our Client

Our client is a modern AI platform for marketing and growth teams. Their AI agents are reimagining marketing workflows—helping teams create content, plan campaigns, and execute strategies with significantly higher velocity and performance. The company sits at the intersection of two major tailwinds: LLMs/agentic AI and the widespread adoption of cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake and Databricks).

They operate with high ownership, first-principles thinking, and a culture that values strong communication, growth mindset, and kindness.

The Role

Our client is hiring a Software Engineer, AI Agents to build and productionize agentic systems that help customers act on their data. This is a product-minded role for someone who can move quickly from prototype → production, is creative with LLM applications, and can architect reliable backend pipelines.

You'll work on AI features that directly power customer workflows—especially around analytics and data questions—and you'll partner closely with product to translate ambiguity into elegant systems.

What You'll Work On

  • Rapidly iterate on proofs of concept (POCs) to explore the ceiling of AI in data + marketing workflows

  • Make key decisions on LLM architecture and frameworks, balancing speed, reliability, and maintainability

  • Build production “data agents” that use a company's warehouse data to answer analytics and data science questions about users and marketing performance

  • Develop a deep understanding of user workflows and design seamless AI-assisted experiences (not just “chatbots”)

  • Productionize LLM pipelines with strong engineering fundamentals: observability, evaluations, safety/guardrails, cost control, and performance

What Our Client Is Looking For

  • Strong backend and systems fundamentals (you can architect and ship end-to-end systems)

  • Product intuition and customer empathy—you build for real workflows, not demos

  • Creativity in applying LLMs/agents to practical problems

  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and iterating quickly

  • Strong communication skills and ownership mindset

Note: Prior LLM experience is not required. The team values strong technical skills and product thinking most; you'll learn fast on the AI side if you have the fundamentals.

Compensation

  • Base salary: $180,000–$320,000 USD (location-independent within North America)

  • Equity included (details shared in process)

Interview Process

This process emphasizes product sense, system architecture, and values alignment—without programming interviews.

  1. Recruiter Screen (30 min): Intro + mutual fit

  2. System Design Screen (60 min): Design a data processing feature end-to-end

  3. Hiring Manager Interview (30 min): Past experience + operating preferences + values alignment

  4. Agent Building Systems Interview (75 min): Architect an agentic system conceptually, incorporating product/customer requirements and technical constraints
