Remote Data Science information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a solid background in mathematics or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Expertise in programming languages such as Python or R, familiarity with machine learning libraries, and experience with cloud-based data platforms are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you effectively collaborate and deliver results in a remote environment. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, meaningful insights, and successful teamwork despite physical distance.

How do remote data scientists typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver insights?

Remote data scientists often work closely with product managers, engineers, and business analysts using digital collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms. Regular virtual meetings, code sharing via Git repositories, and clear documentation are essential to ensure alignment and transparency. While working remotely can present challenges in communication, proactive updates and scheduled syncs help foster strong teamwork and keep projects on track.

What is remote data science?

Remote data science refers to the practice of performing data analysis, modeling, and interpretation tasks from a location outside of a traditional office, such as from home or a co-working space. Remote data scientists use tools like Python, R, and SQL to analyze data, build predictive models, and communicate insights to stakeholders, all while collaborating virtually with their teams. This setup offers flexibility and can increase access to global job opportunities, but also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills to be effective.

What are the qualifications to get a remote data science job?

The qualifications for a remote data scientist depend in large part on your employer and their industry. Most employers expect remote data science professionals to have at least a bachelor’s degree in statistics, math, computer science, or a related field. Some expect postgraduate degrees in a field like data mining or machine learning or demonstrable skills in these areas. As a remote worker, you need access to relevant programs and an internet connection. You may also want to pursue certification, such as becoming a Certified Analytics Professional (CAP).

Can I work remotely as a remote data scientist?

Yes, many remote data scientist positions are available, allowing professionals to work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. These roles often require skills in programming, data analysis, and familiarity with tools like Python, R, or SQL, and may involve collaboration through online platforms. Remote work arrangements are common in the data science field, especially with the increasing adoption of cloud-based tools and flexible schedules.

Job description

About OneSix

OneSix is a leading data and artificial intelligence (AI) consultancy that helps businesses build the strategy, technology, and teams they need to scale growth and efficiency. Its team of skilled Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Machine Learning (ML) Experts, and AI Engineers seamlessly integrate with client teams to solve their most challenging business problems. Leveraging strategic partnerships with Snowflake, AWS, Matillion, Fivetran, Pyramid Analytics, and more, the company uses modern technology, scalable architectures, and industry best practices. With the recent acquisition of Strong Analytics, an ML and AI consultancy, OneSix is a uniquely powerful business partner to the enterprise, with a talent mix that is nearly impossible to find under one roof.

OneSix is a fast-growing firm with significant career opportunities for motivated professionals who want to help create a unique company. We are committed to fostering an inclusive employee experience that reflects the world we live in today. We’re an equal-opportunity employer that welcomes people regardless of backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives.

Senior Data Scientist

OneSix is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to build and deploy cutting-edge ML solutions for a diverse client base. You\'ll work alongside engineers and scientists to tackle complex problems, push the state of the art, and help shape how we do ML at OneSix. While this isn\'t a people management role, you\'ll serve as a technical anchor on your team — mentoring others and influencing project direction.

What You\'ll Do
  • Research, design, and build ML models across a range of use cases — we work with clients across industries and problem types
  • Work across the full deployment spectrum: managed cloud ML platforms (SageMaker, Vertex AI, Azure ML) and containerized solutions built from scratch in Python on raw infrastructure
  • Collaborate with engineers to integrate models into production environments and uphold MLOps best practices
  • Preprocess and analyze large datasets; think critically about data quality and what it means for model reliability
  • Contribute to technical discussions across the team, fostering a culture of shared learning and continuous improvement
  • Translate complex ML concepts clearly for both technical collaborators and non-technical client stakeholders
What You Bring
  • 4+ years of hands-on ML experience with a track record of shipping models to production
  • You have a strong suit in at least one area — predictive/classical ML, computer vision, or LLM/agentic systems — and you’re genuinely curious about adjacent domains
  • Strong Python and SQL skills, production-code instincts, and Git fluency; R or C++ a plus
  • Comfortable across the full deployment stack: managed cloud services and containerized solutions built from scratch (Docker, EC2-style environments)
  • Deep understanding of ML algorithms, statistical modeling, and optimization
  • M.S. in a quantitative field, or equivalent depth demonstrated through shipped work
  • Clear communicator who can explain their methodology and defend their choices
  • Must be based in the US or Canada
Compensation / Benefits
  • Competitive compensation
  • Company-paid medical, vision, dental, and wellness benefits for employees
  • 401k Employer match
  • Company-provided home office equipment
  • Flexible vacation and sick days
  • Team-oriented and supportive working environment
  • Company-sponsored events and swag

This position offers a base salary in the range of $140,000–$180,000 USD annually, depending on experience and location. Compensation may vary based on factors including geographic location, level of experience, skills, and performance. This salary range reflects base pay only and does not include any additional compensation such as bonuses, equity, or benefits.
