Job description

We are seeking a highly analytical and commercially minded Sr/Lead/Principal Fundamentals Analyst to support our natural gas trading, storage, and commercial activities. This role will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and forecasting natural gas fundamentals and market dynamics, exclusively focusing on Gulf Coast supply-demand balances, storage market dynamics, seasonal opportunities, and basis market development 

The successful candidate will develop actionable market insights that support physical and financial trading decisions, natural gas storage optimization, commercial strategy, and executive decision-making. This individual must be a self-starter capable of working independently while effectively communicating market views and recommendations across trading, commercial, and executive teams. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Market Analysis & Forecasting: Build and maintain detailed Gulf Coast natural gas supply-demand balance models, incorporating production, LNG demand, storage, pipeline flows, power burn, industrial demand, and exports, and developing short- and long-term market forecasts based on those balances.
  • Infrastructure & Flow Monitoring: Monitor pipeline operations, maintenance activity, constraints, storage utilization, LNG terminal operations, and basis market movements impacting Gulf Coast supply-demand balances.
  • Industry Engagement & Market Intelligence: Develop and maintain relationships with key market participants, including end users, pipeline operators, storage operators, LNG participants, consultants, marketers, and data providers. Leverage industry contacts and market intelligence to enhance fundamental analysis, validate market views, and identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Storage Market Analysis & Asset Optimization: Develop fundamental views on natural gas storage markets and evaluate seasonal, locational, and volatility-driven opportunities impacting storage asset value. Analyze inventory levels, injection and withdrawal economics, carry structures, basis relationships, and operational constraints to support storage optimization and trading decisions.
  • Data Visualization & Reporting: Create dashboards, presentations, recurring reports, and analytical tools that effectively communicate market data, forecasts, and trading-relevant insights to stakeholders across the organization.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with origination, trading, operations, scheduling, and commodities analytics teams to ensure alignment of market views, assumptions, and methodologies.
  • Strategic Input: Provide actionable market insights and recommendations to Commodities leadership and senior management, contributing to strategy, asset optimization, and risk management decisions.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in natural gas markets, including at least 2 years researching, managing, optimizing, or trading assets in the U.S. Gulf Coast market.
  • Bachelor's degree in economics, engineering, finance, data science, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus. 
  • Experience analyzing natural gas storage economics, seasonal spreads, inventory dynamics, basis markets, and storage valuation drivers.
  • Established network of industry contacts across the U.S. natural gas value chain, with the ability to gather, assess, and synthesize market intelligence from a broad range of market participants.
  • Strong modeling skills in Excel is a must. Familiarity with data tools such as Python, SQL, Power BI, or other programming and visualization platforms is a plus.  
  • Deep understanding of the physical natural gas market, pipeline infrastructure, and pricing dynamics.
  • Excellent communication skills - able to synthesize and present complex information clearly and persuasively.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time for customer meetings, industry conferences, market participant engagement, and department-wide events.
  • The selected candidate must reside within the Houston, Texas area and perform in office work regularly, but will be allowed to work remotely occasionally.

Preferred Experience and Skills: 

  • Experience with EIA, PointLogic, Genscape, pipeline EBBs, or similar data sources. 
  • Prior experience supporting a trading desk.
