Job description

Senior Azure Messaging Platform Engineer
Contract | Remote (Pacific hours required)
About the Role
We're looking for a hands-on Senior Azure Messaging Platform Engineer to help build and operate mission-critical enterprise messaging infrastructure on Azure Service Bus. This role owns work end-to-end - from design through production deployment and documentation - with a primary focus on implementing geo-replication for high availability and disaster recovery across Azure regions.
This is a senior individual contributor role, not an architecture-only position. You'll be doing the work yourself: writing Terraform, executing failovers, building runbooks, and troubleshooting production issues.
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and support enterprise messaging solutions on Azure Service Bus Premium (queues, topics, subscriptions, DLQs, retries, sessions, ordering, and more).
  • Implement and operationalize Azure Service Bus Geo-Replication across regions to meet HA/DR targets.
  • Build and maintain DR runbooks; plan and execute failover/failback testing and document lessons learned.
  • Write and maintain Terraform for messaging infrastructure, including reusable modules.
  • Automate deployment, failover, and DR validation using Python, PowerShell, and/or Azure CLI.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot messaging health using tools like Dynatrace or Azure Monitor.
  • Provide senior-level (L3) production support and participate in incident response.
What You'll Need
  • 7+ years of cloud, middleware, or enterprise messaging engineering experience.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with Azure Service Bus Premium in production.
  • Experience implementing multi-region HA/DR or geo-replication for a messaging platform.
  • Strong, non-negotiable Terraform experience for infrastructure deployment.
  • Ability to clearly explain RTO/RPO and lead DR exercises and failover execution.
  • Solid understanding of enterprise messaging patterns (DLQs, retries, dedup, sessions, ordering, idempotency).
Nice to Have
  • Python, PowerShell, or Azure CLI scripting for automation.
  • Experience with Dynatrace, Azure Monitor, or Log Analytics.
  • Background in high-throughput, mission-critical environments (finance, banking, transportation).
  • CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code experience.
  • IBM MQ or TIBCO experience (helpful, not required).
Logistics
  • Term: Contract through end of 2025, with strong likelihood of extension.
  • Location: Remote, but must work Pacific time hours. West Coast preferred, not required.
Pay Range: $60-70 per hour, depending upon experience. Health & Medical Benefits, 401K, Employee Assistance Program, and Sick Time applicable by state.
