Remote Data Entry Coding involves basic data entry tasks across various industries, requiring minimal certifications. Remote Medical Coding is specialized for healthcare, requiring medical coding certifications. While both roles are remote and computer-based, medical coding demands industry-specific knowledge and credentials, making it more specialized than general data entry coding.

What is remote data entry coding?

Remote data entry coding involves entering, updating, and managing data in digital systems from a location outside a traditional office environment. This job typically requires accurately inputting information, such as codes, numbers, or text, into databases or software platforms. Employees often work from home and may handle sensitive data, making attention to detail and confidentiality important. Common industries hiring for these roles include healthcare, finance, and e-commerce. Remote data entry coding jobs usually require basic computer skills, familiarity with relevant software, and reliable internet access.

What are the most common challenges faced in a remote data entry coding role and how can they be managed?

One of the main challenges in a remote data entry coding position is maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail while working independently. Distractions at home and repetitive tasks can sometimes lead to errors or decreased productivity. Setting up a dedicated, quiet workspace and following a structured daily routine can help minimize mistakes. Additionally, staying connected with team members via regular check-ins and using collaboration tools ensures data consistency and timely communication of any issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Data Entry Coding Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Entry Coding Specialist, you need strong attention to detail, fast and accurate typing skills, and a solid understanding of data management procedures, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with data entry software, spreadsheets (such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets), and sometimes basic coding or database management systems is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, self-motivation, and effective time management are crucial soft skills for remote work success. These competencies ensure error-free data processing, maintain data integrity, and support efficient workflow in a remote environment.

Job description

Why ADN? Join the American Data Network family and become part of an established, purpose-driven healthcare quality organization with more than 30 years of experience. At ADN, our work supports hospitals and healthcare clients in improving quality, patient safety, and clinical outcomes. We value integrity, accuracy, collaboration, and professionalism, and we are looking for experienced abstractors who take pride in producing high-quality work.
Position Summary: American Data Network is seeking experienced certified Oncology Data Specialists (ODS) to support accurate and timely oncology data abstraction for assigned healthcare clients. This role is ideal for candidates with recent, hands-on oncology data abstraction experience who can independently review clinical documentation, apply registry specifications, and meet assigned deadlines with a high level of accuracy.
This is not a general data entry position. Candidates must have direct healthcare quality reporting, clinical chart review, or data abstraction experience specific to Oncology.
Position Details: ADN hires both contractors and full-time employees for Data Abstraction roles. Contractors must be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Reviews patient medical records and abstracts data for oncology registries.
  • Applies registry specifications, definitions, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and abstraction guidelines accurately and consistently.
  • Maintains compliance with NCRA and other applicable guidelines to ensure the integrity and quality of the registry data.
  • Collaborates with oncology program leadership, performance improvement teams, and clinical staff to clarify documentation and support oncology program goals.
  • Enters accurate and complete data into assigned registry platforms, EHRs, vendor tools, or other data collection systems.
  • Maintains a high level of abstraction accuracy, completeness, and attention to detail.
  • Meets assigned productivity expectations, weekly progress goals, and internal and client deadlines.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities, including feedback, correction, validation, and IRR reviews.
  • Communicates professionally with account leads, team members, and client contacts when clarification is needed.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and complies with ADN, client, HIPAA, and data security requirements.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Current Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) required.
  • Minimum 1 year of oncology registry experience required, with 2 or more years preferred.
  • Advanced understanding of oncology registry processes, coding, registry rules, and manuals, including SEER, AJCC, and other applicable standards.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Comfort working in multiple EHRs, registry platforms, vendor tools, and data collection systems as assigned.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Contractors must have high-speed secure internet, a PC or laptop, and at least two monitors.

Preferred:
  • Experience using oncology registry applications, reports, and other related data collection resources.
  • Experience with IRR, QA review, audit validation, and/or abstraction accuracy review.

Screening & Onboarding:
Qualified candidates will complete an initial phone screen to evaluate qualifications and proof of certification.
ADN does not provide basic Oncology abstraction training, so candidates should already have the experience needed for the role. After hire, ADN provides onboarding to ADN processes, client systems, EHR access, documentation tendencies, and other client-specific workflows.
Why This Role May Be a Good Fit: This position may be a strong fit for experienced and certified Oncology Data Specialists (ODS) who enjoy independent work, flexible scheduling, chart reviews, healthcare quality reporting, and contributing to meaningful work that supports hospitals and patient care. ADN offers a knowledgeable and supportive team environment, multiple abstraction opportunities, and potential growth into lead or expanded quality roles for strong performers.
