What is a remote data engineer?

A Remote Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines, databases, and data processing systems while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure data is collected, stored, and made accessible efficiently and securely. Remote Data Engineers use programming languages like Python or Scala, work with technologies such as SQL, Hadoop, or cloud platforms, and address challenges related to data quality and scalability. Their remote role allows them to work for companies regardless of geographic location, often relying on virtual collaboration tools to stay connected with their teams.

What does a remote data engineer do?

As a remote data engineer, you focus on collecting, storing, and organizing large amounts of information. You work from home to design, develop, and maintain systems for the mining, warehousing, and processing of data. A data engineer communicates with employers, clients, or other data professionals to assess the needs of the project and develop and implement solutions to meet those needs. Data engineers also take steps to manage current database architecture and make updates when needed. Remote engineers typically handle their responsibilities in a cloud-based environment using “big data” tools, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python or Scala, expertise in SQL, data modeling, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), big data tools (like Hadoop and Spark), and certifications in cloud or data engineering are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help remote data engineers collaborate effectively and stay productive in a distributed environment. These competencies ensure reliable data pipelines, scalable solutions, and seamless teamwork, which are critical for organizational success in data-driven projects.

How do remote data engineers typically collaborate with other team members across different time zones?

Remote Data Engineers often work with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and software engineers, many of whom may be located in different parts of the world. Collaboration is usually facilitated through project management tools, version control platforms, and regular virtual meetings. It’s common to have a mix of synchronous check-ins and asynchronous communication, allowing for flexible scheduling and efficient handoffs. Strong written communication skills and proactive status updates are essential for staying aligned with team objectives and project deadlines.

What is the difference between Remote Data Engineer vs Remote Data Analyst?

Common Search IntentBuilding data pipelines, data infrastructureData reporting, insights, visualization

Remote Data Engineers focus on designing and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure, often requiring programming and cloud skills. Remote Data Analysts interpret data, create reports, and provide insights using visualization tools. While both roles work with data, their responsibilities and skill sets differ, making each suited for different career paths within data teams.

Are remote data engineers still in demand?

Remote data engineers are currently in high demand due to the increasing reliance on data-driven decision making and cloud-based data platforms. Skills in SQL, Python, cloud services, and data pipeline tools are highly sought after, and many organizations continue to hire for remote roles to access a broader talent pool.

Can a remote data engineer work remotely?

Yes, remote data engineers can work remotely, as the role primarily involves managing data pipelines, databases, and cloud-based tools that can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. Many companies offer remote positions for data engineers, often requiring skills in SQL, Python, cloud platforms, and data architecture. However, some roles may require occasional on-site presence or specific certifications depending on the employer's policies.

As part of the Managed Services Technology Team, you will design, build, and support the server, virtualization, storage, and backup infrastructure that runs proprietary and third-party applications across Windows and Linux. This is a systems-first role: deep, hands-on ownership of virtualization (VMware, with exposure to alternative hypervisors such as Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox, Xen, or KVM), backup and DR (Veeam and Zerto), and enterprise compute and SAN storage. Automation is central to the work - you will use scripting and infrastructure-as-code tooling to standardize builds, patching, and recovery. You will focus on performance tuning, hardening, design, implementation, and break/fix resolution, and provide both technical and business input into projects. A working knowledge of the surrounding network is expected, but the core of the job is systems engineering.Job DescriptionOwn the day-to-day operation, change control, and maintenance of the systems estate - servers, hypervisors, storage, and backup/DR - including patching, upgrades, builds, replacement, and troubleshooting. Serve as an escalation point and mentor to the Contour Operations Center, and manage the ticket queue to ensure all work is handled appropriately.Systems Engineering & OperationsDesign, build, and administer virtualization environments - primarily VMware vSphere/ESXi (clusters, vCenter, resource pools, HA/DRS, capacity planning), with exposure to alternative hypervisors such as Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, Xen, or KVM.Own backup and disaster recovery using Veeam and Zerto, including replication, failover/failback testing, retention policies, and recovery validation.Provision, patch, harden, and maintain Windows Server and Linux systems, including Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, and core platform services.Manage SAN storage and SAN switching - provisioning, zoning, LUN/datastore management, performance, and capacity.Build and maintain automation for provisioning, patching, configuration, and reporting using scripting and infrastructure-as-code tooling (e.g., PowerShell/PowerCLI, Bash, Python, Ansible/Terraform), reducing manual effort and standardizing repeatable tasks.Develop runbooks and scheduled jobs to automate routine maintenance, health checks, and backup/DR validation.Monitor system health and resource usage, tuning parameters to improve throughput, stability, and efficiency. Design & StrategyCreate engineering designs that meet business and operational objectives, including business continuity and disaster recovery solutions.Define standard designs, templates, and procedures for projects following existing architectures, and develop new patterns where required.Provide subject matter expertise across the technology lifecycle - risk, refresh, migration, and retirement.Estimate and plan domain activities to feed end-to-end project plans and advise leadership on architecture and infrastructure planning.Evaluate and recommend tools with a cost-conscious approach, drawing on industry best practices and prior project executions.SupportManage the ticket queue and lead resolution of complex systems issues across compute, virtualization, storage, and backup.Lead or participate in medium-to-high complexity projects and on-call production support.Proactively implement procedures to prevent and reduce the severity of outages.Perform upgrades and installations alongside application teams and keep asset and time-tracking systems current.Be available for 24/7 on-call on a rotating team schedule once onboarded.QualificationsMSP experience required.Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, MIS, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience accepted.5+ years in design, implementation, and support of enterprise systems infrastructure.Strong hands-on expertise with VMware (vSphere/ESXi/vCenter) in production environments; experience with alternative hypervisors (Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, Xen, or KVM) is a plus.Strong experience with backup and disaster recovery platforms - Veeam and Zerto (or comparable replication/DR tooling).Solid Windows Server and Linux administration, including core services such as Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.Hands-on knowledge of server hardware (e.g., Dell), SAN switching, and SAN storage.Proven automation experience - scripting with PowerShell/PowerCLI, Bash, or Python, and familiarity with configuration management or infrastructure-as-code tools such as Ansible or Terraform to standardize and scale operations.Understanding of systems and network security best practices and hardening.Networking (Nice to Have)Working knowledge of routing and switching, firewalls, and VPNs sufficient to support and troubleshoot the systems environment.Familiarity with Cisco, Palo Alto, or Fortinet, and common protocols (TCP/UDP, HTTP/HTTPS, NFS, SMB), is a plus but not the primary focus of the role.
