What is a remote data engineer?

A Remote Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines, databases, and data processing systems while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure data is collected, stored, and made accessible efficiently and securely. Remote Data Engineers use programming languages like Python or Scala, work with technologies such as SQL, Hadoop, or cloud platforms, and address challenges related to data quality and scalability. Their remote role allows them to work for companies regardless of geographic location, often relying on virtual collaboration tools to stay connected with their teams.

What does a remote data engineer do?

As a remote data engineer, you focus on collecting, storing, and organizing large amounts of information. You work from home to design, develop, and maintain systems for the mining, warehousing, and processing of data. A data engineer communicates with employers, clients, or other data professionals to assess the needs of the project and develop and implement solutions to meet those needs. Data engineers also take steps to manage current database architecture and make updates when needed. Remote engineers typically handle their responsibilities in a cloud-based environment using “big data” tools, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python or Scala, expertise in SQL, data modeling, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), big data tools (like Hadoop and Spark), and certifications in cloud or data engineering are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help remote data engineers collaborate effectively and stay productive in a distributed environment. These competencies ensure reliable data pipelines, scalable solutions, and seamless teamwork, which are critical for organizational success in data-driven projects.

How do remote data engineers typically collaborate with other team members across different time zones?

Remote Data Engineers often work with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and software engineers, many of whom may be located in different parts of the world. Collaboration is usually facilitated through project management tools, version control platforms, and regular virtual meetings. It’s common to have a mix of synchronous check-ins and asynchronous communication, allowing for flexible scheduling and efficient handoffs. Strong written communication skills and proactive status updates are essential for staying aligned with team objectives and project deadlines.

Job description

Customer Solutions Engineer

Intellicheck

$95,000 - $120,000

Location: Remote

Intellicheck is an industry-leading trusted real time identity verification company delivering on-demand digital and physical identity validation solutions to stop identity-based fraud. Our proprietary technology analyzes the authoritative barcode data embedded in government-issued IDs to detect fake IDs in under a second — with 99.975% decisioning accuracy — providing a seamless, invisible verification experience across in-person and digital channels.

Intellicheck is looking for a Customer Solution Engineer who thrives at the intersection of technology and client success. This role bridges technical presales, customer onboarding, and backend data research — making it ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation who enjoys engaging with clients and solving real-world problems, rather than spending the majority of their time writing code.

You will become a deep product expert on Intellicheck’s Identity Verification Solution, serving as a trusted technical advisor throughout the sales cycle and beyond. In addition to presales activities, you will conduct backend data research and investigation on specific customer accounts, supporting account health, escalations, and onboarding success. Clear communication, intellectual curiosity, and a customer-first mindset are essential.

What You'll Do

Presales & Solution Engineering

  • Engage with prospective clients to assess their technical requirements, business challenges, and integration needs.
  • Create and deliver compelling technical presentations, demonstrations, and proposals that clearly articulate the value of Intellicheck’s offerings.
  • Collaborate with customers to design and execute Proofs of Concept (PoCs) to validate the effectiveness of proposed solutions.
  • Partner with the sales team to respond to RFPs and RFIs, contributing technical depth and accuracy to submissions.
  • Present the product roadmap to sales teams and customers, translating technical capabilities into business value.
  • Provide pre-sales technical support, addressing customer inquiries around product functionality, compatibility, and integration.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation including proposals, case studies, and technical specifications in cooperation with marketing.

Data Research & Backend Support

  • Conduct backend data research and investigation on specific customer accounts using Elasticsearch queries, SQL, and internal tooling to diagnose issues, validate transaction data, and surface actionable insights.
  • Partner with Customer Success and Support teams to investigate customer-reported anomalies, reconcile data discrepancies, and provide clear, data-backed findings.
  • Respond to escalated technical inquiries requiring deep-dive database or backend investigation, documenting findings and recommended resolutions.
  • Build and maintain internal data research scripts, dashboards, and reporting tools that enable non-technical stakeholders to self-serve common customer data inquiries.
  • Produce clear, concise summaries of research findings tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Help define and maintain data quality standards and alert thresholds that support proactive customer success.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated ability to investigate backend systems and translate findings into clear, actionable summaries for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document findings, write runbooks, and deliver confident technical presentations.
  • Proven ability to craft and deliver compelling technical demos and proposals to prospective clients.
  • A customer-first mindset with the ability to balance technical rigor with the responsiveness and urgency required in customer-facing roles.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and comfort working in a fast-paced, remote environment.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience querying and analyzing large datasets using Elasticsearch (aggregations, filters, index management) and/or SQL.
  • A solid understanding of RESTful API design, API transaction logging, and web security fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with event-based architecture, SaaS platform analytics, or identity verification technology is strongly preferred.
  • Experience building lightweight internal tooling or scripts (Python preferred) for data extraction, reporting, or automated research workflows.
  • Experience with ETL processes and transforming data from disparate sources.

Please send a resume.
