Co-op - Systems Engineer

Onsite VSY Vancouver shipyards, North Vancouver BC

Regulatory Compliance Requirements

  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR

  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as you will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program

  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level

Position Summary

As a part of the Engineering Delivery team, we have a current vacancy for a Co-op System Engineering who will support Systems Engineering & Commissioning on site tasks such as day-to-day operation of the Systems Integration, inclusive of Specialty Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Installation Engineering in the resolution of production related issues.

Systems Engineering Intern will be supporting the on-site team to deal with design changes and engineering issues brought about by production and commissioning issues.

Systems Engineering Intern will also be supporting Commissioning activities such as inspections and support of system power-on and configuration.

Start date- January 2027

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Provide Shipyard Systems and Installation Engineering Support Function for assigned NSS projects including:

  • Supporting to solve design issues and proposed baseline changes that arise during production and commissionning and work through to completion by engaging appropriate Thales engineering resources the Customer, Suppliers, production teams and other stakeholders to define the overall solution.

  • Providing engineering support to installation, STW, HAT, SAT, tests, inspection when the issue or problem appears

  • Supporting Engineering Change Process Work Items

  • Supporting the on-site technical team and working collaboratively with the Ottawa project team, and the Customer in the resolution of production issues

  • Creating high-level conceptual designs, innovative, scalable, and adaptive solutions for changes to ship designs as they arise gaining agreement to top level solution documentation.

  • Ensuring Thales Engineering Data correctly flows down to Integrated Product Team (IPT) members

  • Support in the verification and validation of electronic systems

  • Assist in risk management and risk mitigation strategies

  • Assist in obtaining stakeholder agreement about changes to and management of the system requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in Electrical/Systems/Mechanical Engineering program in accredited university and currently studying in 3rd year of study.

  • Involved in design projects, specifically electronic and/or mechanical systems

  • High level oral and written communication skills required for report writing, design justification documentation, and interacting with the customer

  • Willing to work on-site in the shipyard, in both production and commissioning environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the Systems Engineering Life Cycle

  • High level of planning, task management, analytical, and time management skills

  • Experience reading and understanding mechanical drawings and electrical schematics

Special Position Requirements

Physical Environment: Office / Desk work: Approximately 50%. 50% inspections and field work in the shipyard

Minimal lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site (including onboard vehicle or vessel)

Travel: Some overnight travel may be required (<10%)

The compensation range for this role is $55,000 - $65,000 CAD Annual.
