What does a remote control systems engineer do?

A Remote Control Systems Engineer designs, develops, and maintains systems that allow for the remote operation of machines, equipment, or processes. This role involves working with hardware and software to ensure reliable communication and control, often using wireless or networked technologies. Engineers in this field may work on projects ranging from industrial automation to unmanned vehicles, ensuring that systems are safe, efficient, and user-friendly. Their work requires strong knowledge of electronics, control theory, and programming. The ultimate goal is to enable operators to control equipment remotely, often from significant distances, with precision and safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote control systems engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Control Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, control theory, and system integration, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, MATLAB/Simulink, and industry certifications such as PE or ISA are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for designing reliable remote systems, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring seamless operations in automated environments.

How do remote control systems engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a remote work environment?

Remote Control Systems Engineers often work closely with software developers, hardware engineers, and project managers, especially when designing and troubleshooting complex control systems. In a remote setting, collaboration is facilitated through virtual meetings, cloud-based design tools, and regular status updates. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential to ensure alignment across teams, and many organizations use agile methodologies to coordinate tasks and track progress. This collaborative approach not only helps resolve technical challenges efficiently but also fosters continuous learning and knowledge sharing.

Job description

T38Fax isseeking a Linux savvy Systems Engineer to help us manage our data center infrastructure, build out our monitoring and DevOps infrastructure, and help us scale up ourSIP termination and origination services to keep ahead of the very strong demand for our product. Our fax customers use T.38 Fax Over IP (FoIP) to fax reliably over SIP, so we're basically very similar to a VoIP service provider, just without the voice part!

First, a Word About Fax

Fans of John Oliver's "How Is This Still A Thing" segments might be amused to learn that fax remains deeply entrenched in the way many companies transact their daily business. Indeed, it seems fax is still very much a thing! MarketWatch reports that the global fax market is expected to reach $2.4 billion by 2022, growing at a sustained annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% since 2016. A 2017 report by IDC even put that number at 25% growth annually! It's especially surprising then, that most modern VoIP/SIP and cloud-based phone companies neither support fax over SIP nor understand how they might do so (until we show them how easy it is). Our fax-approved SIP trunks are ready to go today and fill a vital need in a growing and under-served industry that shows no signs of slowing down for many years to come.

Your Mission

  • Build and maintain RedHat/CentOS-based Linux servers
  • Troubleshoot network routing and performance issues that have beencharacterized and escalated by technical support team
  • Collaborate with the team to first master, then help manage all aspects of the linux-based on-premise SIP billing and switching infrastructure that powers our service in multiple US data centers
  • Contribute to ongoing efforts to scale and build resiliency into our SIP trunking product
  • Perform general system tasks such as OS and application upgrades, file systemmaintenance, and user administration
  • Install and maintain hardware in data centers
  • Manage web servers, SSL certificates, load balancers, and high availabilityapplications
  • Analyze and resolve service-impacting issues across the whole platform(hardware, software, network) quickly and efficiently while maintainingcommunication with impacted parties
  • Participate in on-call rotation
  • Develop tools and scripts to improve our deployment process and effectivelymonitor custom applications
  • Gain deep knowledge of our complex applications to develop a bird's eye view

Must Haves

  • Extensive experience with SIP-based networks, platforms and related technology
  • Extensive familiarity with Linux, in particular RHEL/CentOS and Debian distributions
  • Extensive understanding of fundamental network concepts such as switching and routing
  • Intermediate experience collecting and analyzing packet captures using Wireshark
  • Basic understanding of MySQL, MSSQL, and/or PostgreSQL/EnterpriseDB
  • Practical knowledge of shell scripting and at least one of the followinglanguages: PHP, Perl, Python, or Ruby
  • Experience with Cacti, Nagios, and SNMP or equivalent
  • Solid working knowledge of Apache and Nginx
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to debug scripts/code and networkissues
  • An understanding of fundamental technologies like TCP/IP, HTTP, and DNS

Nice to Haves

  • B.S. in computer science, computer engineering, or information technology
  • Prior experience with Cisco IOS and Juno OS
  • Prior experience with T.38 FoIP in a mission-critical context
  • Live within driving distance of our Philadelphia data center (or other planned expansion locations)
  • Knowledge of Spacewalk/Satellite/RHN and Cobbler/Kickstarts
  • Experience with Puppet (preferred), Chef, or cfengine
  • Knowledge of VMware vSphere (or ESXi) a plus
  • Experience with Storage Arrays, Fibre Channel or iSCSI SAN, GFS, and RHELHA Cluster
  • Prior experience with HylaFAX, Asterisk, FreeSwitch or other such opentelephony toolkits

Our Offer

  • Competitivesalary with annual profit-sharing bonus
  • Newly renovated office space conveniently located near public transport with in-house restaurant & state-of-the-art gym
  • Casual, informal work environment
  • Generous PTO allowance
  • Health care
  • 401(k)
  • Flyers tickets with VIP parking
  • A team of aces to work with

COVID Update

We have always been a hybrid in-office/remote workforce with employees and contractors spread across several countries and many different timezones, and so we adapted quickly to a fully remote model during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have begun planning our return to our brand new, never-occupied office in Conshohocken PA, and hope to get in there this summer. We do enjoy in-office work and although we do hope that many of our staff will rejoin us there, we have no plans to require in-office and this job can be fully remote for the right candidate, especially one that lives within driving distance of center city Philadelphia (our data center is at 401 N Broad St.) or near any of our planned expansion locations.

Our Story

Founded in 2016 and based in Conshohocken just outside of Philadelphia, PA, T38Fax provides fax-optimized SIP trunks to business customers within the US and Canada. We're similar to a Voice Over IP (VoIP) phone company, except our network is optimized for fax transmissions instead of voice. Our product is unique and in high demand, we're one of just a handful of companies that do this worldwide, and we have an exceptional reputation in the industry. In 2020, T38Fax was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest growing companies in the US and by the Entrepreneurs Forum of Greater Philadelphia (EFGP) as one of the 100 fastest growing companies in the Philly metro area.

We remain small and agile, which makes this a fun, dynamic, and challenging place to work. The work environment is casual and, for the most part, informal. Expectations are high and excellence is encouraged and rewarded. We strive to make sure that we have a team-oriented group that can also work well independently. If you enjoy working in a high freedom, high demand environment with a small but talented group of people this may just be the job for you.

We offer a competitive benefits package including healthcare, a substantial number of paid days off (PTO), a generous profit-sharing plan, and access to our Flyers season tickets for yourself and a guest. We're a great group of people doing exceptional things for our customers and having fun doing it. Like any emerging growth company, this will be hard work, but more importantly, it will be fun and immensely rewarding. We think you already know if this is a position for you, and if so, we look forward to reviewing your application!
