AspectRemote Control Systems EngineerAutomation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in control systemsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in automation or control systems
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, remote monitoringFactories, production lines, industrial settings
Industry UsagePower, manufacturing, aerospaceManufacturing, process industries, robotics
Job FocusDesign and maintain remote control systems for machineryDesign and implement automation solutions for processes

While both roles involve control systems, Remote Control Systems Engineers focus on designing and maintaining remote control solutions for machinery, often in industrial or remote environments. Automation Engineers develop comprehensive automation systems to improve manufacturing processes. The roles overlap in control system knowledge but differ in scope and application.

How do Remote Control Systems Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a remote work environment?

Remote Control Systems Engineers often work closely with software developers, hardware engineers, and project managers, especially when designing and troubleshooting complex control systems. In a remote setting, collaboration is facilitated through virtual meetings, cloud-based design tools, and regular status updates. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential to ensure alignment across teams, and many organizations use agile methodologies to coordinate tasks and track progress. This collaborative approach not only helps resolve technical challenges efficiently but also fosters continuous learning and knowledge sharing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Control Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Control Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, control theory, and system integration, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, MATLAB/Simulink, and industry certifications such as PE or ISA are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for designing reliable remote systems, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring seamless operations in automated environments.

What does a Remote Control Systems Engineer do?

A Remote Control Systems Engineer designs, develops, and maintains systems that allow for the remote operation of machines, equipment, or processes. This role involves working with hardware and software to ensure reliable communication and control, often using wireless or networked technologies. Engineers in this field may work on projects ranging from industrial automation to unmanned vehicles, ensuring that systems are safe, efficient, and user-friendly. Their work requires strong knowledge of electronics, control theory, and programming. The ultimate goal is to enable operators to control equipment remotely, often from significant distances, with precision and safety.

Job description

At QDSS, we focus on solving complex problems that directly impact production, quality, and system performance. If you thrive in hands-on, technical environments, you'll feel right at home here.

We are seeking a Cyber Systems Engineer to support the development of cybersecurity guidance, system requirements, and technical documentation for test equipment used in engineering and production environments.

In this role, you will research cybersecurity standards and internal processes, develop technical documentation and reusable templates, write system and cybersecurity requirements, and define verification methods that support compliance efforts. You will work closely with systems engineers and technical subject matter experts to ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and ready for approval through formal engineering review processes.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys translating technical concepts into clear documentation while supporting systems engineering and cybersecurity compliance initiatives.

What You'll Do

  • Research cybersecurity standards, engineering processes, and internal compliance requirements.
  • Develop and maintain technical help guides, templates, and documentation related to cybersecurity and systems administration.
  • Write system requirements and cybersecurity requirements for engineering programs.
  • Define verification methods for system and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Participate in peer reviews and incorporate technical feedback into documentation.
  • Prepare engineering documentation for formal Change Control Board (CCB) review and approval.
  • Update existing documentation to reflect engineering changes and evolving cybersecurity requirements.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers and technical subject matter experts to ensure documentation accuracy and completeness.
  • Support cybersecurity compliance efforts related to engineering test equipment and supporting infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in systems engineering, cybersecurity, IT systems administration, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience developing or managing systems engineering requirements.
  • Understanding of IT systems administration concepts.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity compliance principles and audit processes.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity vulnerability assessments or vulnerability audit processes.
  • Understanding of engineering test equipment or hardware-based engineering environments.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to create clear, organized engineering documentation.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting engineering documentation within aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Experience in preparing documentation for engineering review boards or Change Control Boards (CCBs).
  • Knowledge of systems engineering lifecycle processes.
  • Experience developing technical procedures, user guides, templates, or engineering standards.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks, compliance standards, or security controls.
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple documentation efforts simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new technologies and engineering processes.

This position may be filled at multiple levels depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications. Responsibilities and compensation will be aligned to the selected level.
