What is a remote contract job?

A remote contract job is a position where an individual is hired to perform specific tasks or projects for a company on a contractual basis, but works from a location outside of the company's physical office—often from home or another remote location. These contracts can range from short-term gigs to long-term agreements, and typically outline the scope of work, payment terms, and duration. Remote contract jobs are popular in fields like IT, writing, design, and consulting, offering flexibility for both employers and workers. Contractors are usually responsible for their own taxes and benefits, as they are not considered full-time employees.

What are the qualifications to get a remote contract job?

The primary qualifications for a remote contract job vary by position, though a college degree and several years of experience are helpful for almost all remote jobs. Employers strongly prefer to hire independent contractors who have demonstrated experience and success within the industry, so the more you've worked in your field of expertise, the easier it is to get a remote contract job doing the same type of work. Employers may also ask you to pass a test of some kind. This is especially common in areas like translation and programming. Fulfilling your responsibilities and duties in a remote contract job requires communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage your time. Many contractors partner with agencies to help find work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote contract professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract professional, strong self-management, time management, and expertise in your field—often demonstrated through a relevant degree or portfolio—are essential. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, project management systems (e.g., Asana, Trello), and electronic contract platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, reliability, and adaptability help you build trust and effectively coordinate with remote teams and clients. These skills ensure productive, high-quality work while maintaining strong client relationships from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote contract roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote contract professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with clients, managing time zones, and staying motivated without direct supervision. To address these issues, it's helpful to establish regular check-ins, utilize project management tools, and set clear expectations at the start of each contract. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and a structured daily routine can improve productivity and work-life balance.

What is the difference between Remote Contract vs Remote Freelance?

AspectRemote ContractRemote Freelance
CredentialsTypically requires company-specific onboarding, sometimes certificationsNo formal credentials required, self-managed
Work EnvironmentEmployed by a company, often with set hours and team integrationIndependent, flexible schedule, self-directed projects
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in corporate settings across industriesPopular among independent professionals and small businesses
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for stability and benefitsCompared for flexibility and independence

Remote Contract roles involve working directly for a company with set terms, hours, and often benefits, providing more stability. Remote Freelance positions offer greater flexibility, allowing professionals to choose projects independently without long-term commitments. Both are remote work options but differ in structure and expectations.

Job description

As Scout's Strategic Construction Contracts Manager, you will play a key role in the contracting for the fastest-growing technologies in the power sector: utility-scale wind, solar, energy storage, and related construction services. Your ability to draw on your knowledge of a combination of the commercial, legal and related aspects of renewables will enable our team to make better informed decisions. You will help develop and execute negotiating strategies, lead Balance of Plant (BOP) and Balance of Systems (BOS) contracts and serve as Scout's contracting representative to our vendors and partners.

This dynamic position will allow you to directly impact Scout's long-term ability to power the energy transition. You will gain exposure to a broad spectrum of work - across technologies and interacting with many teams within Scout.

You will join Scout's Procurement team. This role will support the explosive growth in Scout's portfolio of projects in development and construction.

Key duties in your role will include the following:

  • Lead contract negotiations for BOP/BOS. This includes exhibit management in conjunction with Scout subject matter experts.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Construction, Development, Legal, and other Scout functions to ensure appropriate attention to key terms and conditions.
  • Work with Legal and other Scout functions to develop and improve contract templates for key contracts.
  • Support Construction, Operations and other Scout teams post contract signature, to ensure contracts are understood by the teams using them.
  • Support "lessons learned" on Contracts, so that key learnings from Construction, Operations, and other teams are considered in future contracts.
  • Develop options for Scout's negotiating position for construction services and drive the execution of the selected approaches.
  • Offer intelligent recommendations to management on the best choices for Scout with respect to key terms and conditions and other contractual considerations.
  • Support and actively propose Procurement and Contracts continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
  • We will rely on you to develop systems and tools to drive efficiency in our work. To do so, we expect that you will integrate the expertise you have developed in previous roles while continuing to advance your knowledge of our industry and innovation in contracts.

Requirements

You are a commercially minded professional who likes to work with a wide range of people and is passionate about the ways that renewable energy will make the world a better place. You have a good understanding of risk in contractual terms and are creative in the way you manage that risk in the context of competing priorities.

Subject Matter Expertise

  • A Bachelor's degree. (Degree in legal, business, or related fields are a plus.)
  • 5+ years of BOP/BOS contract or related experience, preferably with utility-scale wind, solar, and/or battery storage.
  • Negotiating strength and aptitude is a positive attribute, willingness to coach other Scout team members in negotiating and contract improvements.
  • Technical aptitude: ability to understand technical and quantitative issues.
  • Previous experience conducting complex contract negotiations, including contractual analysis; previous deal leadership is a plus.
  • Ability to concisely frame issues by providing context, analysis, recommendations, and risk/benefit trade offs, both in written, verbal, and presentation format.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Working Style

  • Independent learner who can quickly apply lessons learned in one area to all other work areas.
  • Strong organizational skills with process orientation and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and deliver top-quality work product in multiple areas without direct supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and to meet deadlines and complete time-sensitive duties.
  • Self-motivator with exceptional leadership and communication skills.
  • Experience using influence rather than authority to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Timeline and Location

We would like the Manager of Strategic Construction Contracts to start as soon as possible.

The candidate preferably will be able to work out of our Boulder office on our current hybrid (3-2) schedule, but Scout is open to remote work.
