What is a remote contract job?

A remote contract job is a position where an individual is hired to perform specific tasks or projects for a company on a contractual basis, but works from a location outside of the company's physical office—often from home or another remote location. These contracts can range from short-term gigs to long-term agreements, and typically outline the scope of work, payment terms, and duration. Remote contract jobs are popular in fields like IT, writing, design, and consulting, offering flexibility for both employers and workers. Contractors are usually responsible for their own taxes and benefits, as they are not considered full-time employees.

What are the qualifications to get a remote contract job?

The primary qualifications for a remote contract job vary by position, though a college degree and several years of experience are helpful for almost all remote jobs. Employers strongly prefer to hire independent contractors who have demonstrated experience and success within the industry, so the more you've worked in your field of expertise, the easier it is to get a remote contract job doing the same type of work. Employers may also ask you to pass a test of some kind. This is especially common in areas like translation and programming. Fulfilling your responsibilities and duties in a remote contract job requires communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage your time. Many contractors partner with agencies to help find work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote contract professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract professional, strong self-management, time management, and expertise in your field—often demonstrated through a relevant degree or portfolio—are essential. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, project management systems (e.g., Asana, Trello), and electronic contract platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, reliability, and adaptability help you build trust and effectively coordinate with remote teams and clients. These skills ensure productive, high-quality work while maintaining strong client relationships from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote contract roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote contract professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with clients, managing time zones, and staying motivated without direct supervision. To address these issues, it's helpful to establish regular check-ins, utilize project management tools, and set clear expectations at the start of each contract. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and a structured daily routine can improve productivity and work-life balance.

Independent Contract Recruiter (1099) - Project-Based, Remote

Providence Real Estate

Wilmette, IL • Remote

Contractor

Job description

Providence Real Estate is looking for an agile, self-directed talent acquisition professional to join our contractor bench as an on-call recruiter. This isn't a steady nine-to-five - it's a flexible, project-based engagement for someone who can step in when hiring needs spike, ramp up fast, and run full-cycle recruiting from first sourcing call to signed offer with minimal oversight. If you thrive on variety, know how to build a candidate pipeline from scratch, and want the independence of contract work without sacrificing the challenge of real full-lifecycle ownership, we'd like to hear from you.

As positions open across our portfolio, you'll be brought in to source, screen, and secure top talent - working independently, but in close partnership with our hiring managers, so every search moves quickly and lands the right hire.

What You'll Do
  • Manage full-cycle recruiting operations for various open roles, including sourcing, initial screening, interviewing, and pipeline tracking.
  • Proactively source active and passive candidates using LinkedIn Recruiter, job boards, and creative networking channels.
  • Partner with hiring managers to understand role requirements and streamline interview steps.
  • Maintain clean, updated records and candidate pipelines within our Applicant Tracking System (ATS).
  • Coordinate interview schedules and facilitate feedback loops between managers and candidates.
What You Bring
  • Proven experience managing full-cycle recruiting independently, with minimal day-to-day oversight.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
  • Comfort ramping up quickly on new roles, teams, and hiring priorities.
  • Ability to work flexible, intermittent hours based on our active project pipeline.
The Engagement

This is a 1099 independent contractor position, engaged on a project-by-project basis as hiring needs arise. Work is fully remote, and hours will vary week to week depending on our active recruiting pipeline - some weeks may be heavier than others, and some may involve no active projects at all. This role suits someone who is already established as an independent recruiting contractor and can move between engagements comfortably.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit the following:

  • Your resume
  • Your preferred hourly rate
  • A brief overview of your weekly availability for intermittent, project-based work
