Remote Consumer Product Design Engineer information

What does a remote consumer product design engineer do?

A Remote Consumer Product Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing consumer products, such as electronics, appliances, or household goods, while working from a remote location. They use design software to create prototypes, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure products meet user needs and company standards. These engineers often conduct user research, iterate on designs based on feedback, and oversee the product's development from concept to production, all while communicating virtually with their teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote consumer product design engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Consumer Product Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or industrial engineering, experience with product design, and a relevant degree. Proficiency in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), knowledge of prototyping tools, and familiarity with product lifecycle management systems are typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively and drive innovative solutions in a remote environment. These skills and qualities are essential for efficiently developing user-focused products and ensuring successful teamwork across distributed teams.

How does a remote consumer product design engineer effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams while working remotely?

As a Remote Consumer Product Design Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as marketing, manufacturing, and user experience—is crucial. Most companies utilize digital collaboration tools (like Slack, Zoom, and project management software) to facilitate regular communication, design reviews, and feedback sessions. You'll often participate in virtual meetings, share design prototypes, and coordinate closely with team members in different locations and time zones. Proactive communication and clear documentation are key to ensuring that your designs align with project goals and manufacturing requirements.

What is the difference between Remote Consumer Product Design Engineer vs Remote Industrial Designer?

AspectRemote Consumer Product Design EngineerRemote Industrial Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Design, Engineering, or related field; proficiency in CAD and prototyping toolsBachelor's in Industrial Design or related field; strong portfolio and CAD skills
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with engineering teams, product managers, and marketing; focuses on functional and user-centered designWorks on aesthetic, ergonomic, and functional aspects of products; often in design studios or remote teams
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, consumer electronics, appliances, and wearable devicesManufacturers, design consultancies, and consumer goods companies

Remote Consumer Product Design Engineers focus on integrating engineering principles with user-centered design to develop functional products, often collaborating with engineering teams. Remote Industrial Designers emphasize aesthetic and ergonomic aspects, creating visually appealing and user-friendly products. While both roles require design skills and CAD proficiency, their primary focus and industry applications differ, making this comparison useful for those exploring related design careers.

  •          Coupled Line Resonance Studies (stuck pole on breakers drives NGR size on switched/fixed line connected shunt reactors to prevent resonance)
  •          Single Pole Automatic Reclosing (NGR sizing, reclose dead time determination, check stability margins, etc)
  •          Series Capacitor Analysis (develop cap size, MOV sizing, etc.)
  •          Line Switching Overvoltage Studies (with/without breaker PIRs and point on wave controllers, etc)
  •          Line Insulation Coordination Studies (includes assessing line clearances and make recommendations for PIRs, sub/line arresters, changes to clearances)
  •          Breaker TRV/RRRV Studies
  •          Line or Sub MAD calculations
  •          Coupling to Adjacent Circuits in ROW
  •          Voltage/Current Unbalance/Transposition Studies
  •          Transformer Energization
  •          TOV studies in HV/EHV systems
  •          EHV Capacitor Switching (analysis and TLI/PIR sizing)
  •          Technoeconomic Conductor Selection Studies
  •          EHV Power Cable Studies (EMT studies of riser design including grounding, cross-bonding, SVL sizing/placement, protection of cables)

The engineer will join a team of experienced engineers and perform detailed EMT analysis for the study work as well as provide guidance to younger staff who this individual will train. Extensive experience with PSCAD is required and knowledge of common loadflow tools, MathCad, Excel is a must.

Depending on experience, applicants may be qualified for a hybrid or remote work arrangement. Relocation to Madison, WI or Chesapeake, VA to work with the team is preferred.
