Job description

Job Summary:

The BESS Construction Manager is responsible for overseeing all field construction activities for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from site mobilization through mechanical completion and commissioning support. This role ensures projects are built safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with design, quality, and regulatory requirements. The Construction Manager serves as the primary on-site leader coordinating subcontractors, inspectors, utilities, and internal teams. 


Job Responsibilities:


Field Construction Management

  • Lead all on-site construction activities for BESS projects including civil, electrical, delivery, turnover and balance-of-plant scopes. 
  • Coordinate installation of battery enclosures/containers, racking systems, inverters, transformers, substations, SCADA, and associated systems. 
  • Develop and execute site logistics plans, sequencing, and daily work plans. 
  • Monitor progress against schedule and drive recovery plans when delays occur. 


Safety Leadership

  • Enforce all site safety programs and ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 855, NEC, and local AHJ requirements. 
  • Lead daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analyses. 
  • Coordinate the investigation of incidents, near misses, and implement corrective actions. 
  • Promote a strong safety-first culture among all contractors and site personnel. 


Contractor & Vendor Oversight

  • Manage EPC subcontractors, electricians, civil crews, and specialty vendors. 
  • Review and enforce contract scope, productivity expectations, and quality standards. 
  • Approve daily reports, manpower loading, and equipment usage. 
  • Coordinate OEM site support and installation supervision. 


Quality Control & Inspections

  • Ensure construction is executed per approved IFC drawings, specifications, and manufacturer requirements. 
  • Manage quality teams to ensure the execution of field quality inspections and the coordination of third-party inspections. 
  • Track non-conformance reports (NCRs) and corrective actions. 
  • Verify proper civil works, component installation, electrical execution, Scope of Work compliance and project turnover. 
  • Manage site quality teams for adherence to quality plan and standards. 


Schedule & Reporting

  • Track daily, weekly, and monthly construction progress. 
  • Provide regular status reports including schedule, safety, quality, and cost updates. 
  • Support look-ahead schedules and critical path reviews. 
  • Assist with change order identification and field-driven scope changes. 


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Engineering, or related field (or sufficient equivalent experience). 
  • 5+ years of construction management experience in utility-scale renewable energy, with strong exposure to BESS projects 
  • Direct experience managing BESS projects required. 
  • Strong knowledge of civil and electrical construction practices. 
  • Proven experience managing subcontractors and field crews. 
  • Willingness to work on-site and travel as required. 
  • Ability to travel to project sites as required. 
  • Strong communication and people management skills.  


Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA 30 certification. 
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery systems and major BESS OEMs. 
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 855, and local AHJ requirements. 
  • Experience with EPC project delivery models. 


Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • Combination of office, remote, and active construction site environments. 
  • Ability to work extended hours during critical project phases. 
  • Working in all weather conditions 
  • Must be able to lift more than 50 lbs. 
  • May require overtime, nights, or weekends based on project needs 
  • Travel up to 100%
