Energy and Water Optimization Leader

Remote - This role is based remotely, but if the selected candidate lives within a specific mile radius of a GM hub, they will be expected to report to the location three times a week {or other frequency dictated by your manager}.

The Role

The Energy & Water Optimization Leader is responsible for driving enterprise energy and water reduction initiatives across manufacturing operations. This role leads the identification, development, and implementation of conservation strategies, operational excellence programs, and capital projects that reduce utility consumption, improve sustainability performance, lower operating costs, and support decarbonization objectives. The position serves as the primary liaison between corporate energy strategy teams and plant operations.

What You'll Do

Energy & Water Optimization Strategy

  • Develop and execute energy efficiency and water conservation strategies.
  • Lead energy and water intensity reduction programs across manufacturing facilities.
  • Support enterprise sustainability, decarbonization, and environmental objectives.
  • Drive implementation of DOE 50001 Ready, ENERGY STAR, and other continuous improvement programs.

Project Development & Execution

  • Build and manage the energy and water project pipeline.
  • Develop business cases for conservation projects and Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs).
  • Support project funding approvals and implementation.
  • Coordinate utility rebate and incentive opportunities.

Plant Engagement & Operational Excellence

  • Serve as the liaison between corporate energy strategy and manufacturing sites.
  • Support plant Energy Conservation Engineers (ECEs) and facility teams.
  • Lead energy treasure hunts and operational assessments.
  • Develop and deploy best practices across manufacturing facilities.
  • Drive accountability through shutdown performance reviews and operational metrics.

Performance Management & Analytics

  • Monitor energy and water consumption trends and identify optimization opportunities.
  • Utilize metering, utility, and operational data to support decision-making.
  • Track savings, project performance, and reduction targets.
  • Partner with data analytics teams to improve visibility through dashboards and reporting tools.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Operations, Sustainability, Finance, ICC, GMIT, Facilities, and external utility partners.
  • Support site water treatment, utility infrastructure, and building systems optimization initiatives.
  • Contribute to enterprise reporting and strategic planning processes.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience leading energy efficiency, water conservation, utilities, facilities, manufacturing, or sustainability programs.
  • Strong project management and financial analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of utility systems, industrial processes, and energy management practices.
  • Ability to influence and lead cross-functional teams
  • 10+ years of experience in energy and water management

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar credential.
  • Experience with ISO 50001 / DOE 50001 Ready programs.
  • Experience with metering systems, Power BI, utility analytics, and energy management software.
  • Background in industrial manufacturing operations.
