What is a remote conservation data scientist?

A Remote Conservation Data Scientist is a professional who analyzes environmental data to support conservation efforts, often working from a location outside of a traditional office or onsite fieldwork setting. They use data science techniques such as statistical analysis, machine learning, and geographic information systems (GIS) to interpret data related to biodiversity, ecosystems, wildlife populations, and climate change. Their work helps inform conservation policies, resource management, and strategies to protect natural habitats. Remote work in this field relies heavily on digital collaboration tools and access to large datasets. These scientists often partner with non-profits, government agencies, or research organizations to tackle global conservation challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote conservation data scientist?

To thrive as a Remote Conservation Data Scientist, you need expertise in data analysis, ecological modeling, and a strong background in environmental science or a related field, often supported by an advanced degree. Proficiency with programming languages like Python or R, GIS tools (such as ArcGIS or QGIS), and relevant data management systems is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills are crucial for translating data insights into actionable conservation strategies with remote teams. These abilities enable effective data-driven decision-making and foster impactful conservation outcomes across diverse and distributed environments.

How does a remote conservation data scientist typically collaborate with field teams and stakeholders?

Remote conservation data scientists often rely on digital communication tools—such as video calls, shared databases, and project management platforms—to work closely with field researchers, conservation managers, and external partners. While they may not be physically present at field sites, they regularly interpret, analyze, and visualize data collected on the ground, providing actionable insights for ongoing projects. Regular virtual meetings are common for aligning on project goals, discussing data quality, and adapting analytical approaches based on field realities. This collaborative structure ensures that data-driven recommendations are both relevant and grounded in real-world conservation challenges.

Job description

Description

Who We Are:

Dedicated to making a difference in law enforcement agencies across the U.S., our mission is to transform policing by elevating officer performance with a preventative-based early intervention system. Driven by data science and powered by machine learning, our offering analyzes officer performance data in order to identify potentially problematic behavior. In partnership with the University of Chicago, we've developed the world's largest multi-jurisdictional officer performance database, and the only research-driven, evidence-based early intervention system available in policing today.

We're also the only provider of a fully integrated, cloud-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that simplifies essential policing workflows. This platform is designed to be a single-source solution for all operational needs, driving extensive efficiency gains and providing best-in-class advanced analytics and insights.

Benchmark Analytics provides a comprehensive, all-in-one solution that is advancing police force management through state-of-the-art technology and market-leading data and analytics.

The Role:

We are currently seeking a talented Lead Data Analyst to join us as we develop our data-driven, analytic-focused, and predictive products to help revolutionize the law enforcement sector. In this role, you will work closely with clients to understand and map their data, analyze large datasets, and support the development of data pipelines and ETL processes. You will also play a key role in identifying data quality issues, optimizing ingestion processes, and presenting findings to internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients in understanding their data to identify the best fit data for Benchmark products and data science needs
  • Work with clients to understand data creation processes, document findings, and articulate them to internal stakeholders
  • Analyze large file-based datasets using data transformation tools such as Excel, Databrew, and SQL to effectively map data from source systems to target systems
  • Continuously optimize data processes to increase efficiency and quality
  • Validate received and extracted data for completeness to ensure it meets data science and system requirements
  • Develop and maintain documentation for data pipeline workflows, ETL processes, and data dictionaries
  • Provide input and feedback on data structures, data quality, and data consistency
  • Identify data quality issues, investigate root cause analysis, and work with appropriate teams to resolve them
  • Analyze pipeline processes, identify inefficiencies, suggest improvements, and test solutions to optimize data ingestion and reduce implementation time
  • Support process documentation to prepare the team and company for growth and scale
  • Develop and maintain documentation for standard operating procedures, workflows, and data governance policies
  • Prepare presentations and reports based on analysis results and present findings to various stakeholders in a clear and engaging manner
  • Assist in client configuration, implementation, and deployment of analytic systems as needed to ensure client success
  • Periodic travel within the United States required

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 3-4+ years of client-facing analyst experience, specifically involving direct client engagement that includes a data component
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex topics clearly and concisely
  • Enjoys working with data, testing assumptions, and conducting exploratory data analysis
  • Ability to understand the meaning of data to effectively map it from source system to target system
  • Experience and/or knowledge of ETL processes and relational databases, with an understanding of ETL development
  • Strong data sense, including an ability to recognize patterns and understand central tendencies within qualitative and quantitative data
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn new technical products and skills quickly
  • Strong sense of process and understanding of how individual steps relate to achieve desired end results
  • Capable of managing multiple concurrent tasks and projects while meeting deadlines and working effectively with others
  • Able to work independently with minimal guidance, particularly in complex and non-routine situations
  • Skilled in communicating effectively across multiple levels, including customers, team members, and managers, in a fast-paced environment

What We Offer:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off.
  • Ability to work in a fully remote environment (must be based in the U.S. and willing to work in Central Time Zone).
  • Summer Half-Day Fridays.
  • Freed Up Fridays during Spring, Fall, and Winter months to promote productivity and dedicated heads-down work time.
  • Medical, dental, and vision plan offerings along with 401(k).
  • Employer-paid Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and Life Insurance.
  • Other Voluntary Benefits include additional Life Insurance, Spouse Life Insurance, and Accident Insurance.
  • The satisfaction that comes with being part of a solution that has real impact in the world.
  • A diverse workforce and inclusive environment that embraces unique contributions and experiences.
  • An empowered culture that encourages creativity and professional growth.

Estimated Annual Salary Range:

$100k - $120k; based on role, experience, and location

Additional Information:

  • Benchmark Analytics is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity of all kinds in our effort to create a stellar workforce of committed and passionate team members.
  • Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor employment visas at this time, so we can only accept applications from candidates who are authorized to work in the U.S.
