What are remote computer science jobs?

Remote computer science jobs include a wide variety of roles focused on the use and analysis of computers and networks, including security specialists, network administrators, and software programmers. In these roles, you may develop hardware or software, control user accounts and permissions, analyze security procedures, manage confidential information, order repairs and replacements, manage inventory levels, conduct penetration tests, or manage a full development cycle for new software. Remote computer science jobs frequently use databases, private networks, intrusion detection systems, and remote conferencing software to help coordinate jobs. This is something of a catch-all term for computer-based positions, so if you are looking for a specific role, such as a remote programmer or remote computer engineer, you may need to narrow your search terminology.

What are remote computer science jobs?

Remote computer science jobs are positions that involve the application of computer science principles—such as programming, software development, data analysis, and cybersecurity—that can be performed from any location with internet access. These roles often include software engineer, web developer, data scientist, system administrator, and more. Remote computer science professionals collaborate with teams virtually, using digital communication and project management tools. This flexibility allows employees to work from home or anywhere in the world, offering a better work-life balance and access to global job opportunities.

How do remote computer science professionals typically collaborate with their teams to ensure project success?

Remote computer science professionals usually rely on a mix of communication and project management tools—such as Slack, Zoom, GitHub, and Jira—to collaborate effectively with their teams. Regular virtual meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation help maintain alignment and transparency. While working remotely offers flexibility, it can also require proactive communication and self-management to avoid misunderstandings and stay on track with deliverables. Many teams adopt Agile methodologies to structure their work and foster collaboration, regardless of physical location.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer science professional?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Science professional, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Proficiency with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira, Zoom) is essential. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are vital soft skills for working independently and with distributed teams. These skills and qualities enable efficient development, seamless teamwork, and successful project delivery in a remote environment.

Can I work remotely with a computer science degree?

Yes, many computer science roles can be performed remotely, especially in software development, programming, and IT support. Remote work often requires strong technical skills, familiarity with collaboration tools, and self-discipline, and some positions may require specific certifications or experience.

Job description

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a full-time Web Application Developer to join a team responsible for the development, deployment, and maintenance of several websites and web-based applications within NASA’s Earth Science Division. Our projects include engagement-focused websites driven by WordPress and Drupal, and knowledge management tools.

The ideal candidate is an experienced and forward-thinking web application developer – primarily focused on PHP using Drupal and WordPress – who has interests in a wide variety of application development opportunities. You will be part of a dynamic, virtual team experimenting with several different web-based platforms while collaborating and supporting cross-functional delivery teams that include fellow developers, designers, content producers, project management, and customer stakeholders.

Some of your work will be part of a larger effort, other work will involve self-directed efforts, but all are focused on delivering an experience to various internal and external audiences that will inform and create awareness about the breadth of knowledge and information held within NASA’s Earth Science Division.

We offer a relaxed, fulfilling work environment, a reasonably flexible schedule, a 40-hour workweek, and competitive benefits and salary. You will get to work with some of the brightest minds in NASA science and share the fruits of their labor with the whole world. You will also have opportunities to share your creative ideas and development techniques with our larger NASA community.

** Applicants will be required to submit a code sample or point us to your personal GitHub (or similar). **

The successful candidate must be a U.S. Citizen. The position is a full-time, remote position. While this team is distributed across several time zones, the team works primarily on an Eastern time schedule.

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science, Information Systems or web design/development or comparable work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in deploying commercial or government websites and secure web applications/content management systems.
  • Drupal 10/11 maintenance and development, including custom module development.
  • Critical thinking focused on the delivery of architectures and solutions to challenges.
  • Sound experience in fundamental web technologies.
  • Experience using version control systems (we use Git).
  • Ability to write maintainable and scalable code.
  • Ability to both take direction and work in a self-directed environment as an effective team member.
  • An interest in supporting NASA’s communication and research goals.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Wordpress module development.
  • Developing in an Agile environment.
  • Experience using Docker, Composer, and Drush.
  • AWS administration experience (EC2, RDS, S3 and Application Load Balancers).
  • System/server administration and configuration.
