Remote Computer Science Graduate information

What is a remote computer science graduate?

Remote computer science graduates are individuals who have completed a degree in computer science and work in jobs that allow them to perform their duties from locations outside of a traditional office, often from home. These graduates leverage their programming, problem-solving, and analytical skills to contribute to software development, data analysis, IT support, and other technical roles remotely. The demand for remote computer science professionals has grown due to advancements in technology and the increasing acceptance of remote work by employers. Remote roles can offer greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer science graduate?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Science Graduate, a strong foundation in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), algorithms, data structures, and a relevant computer science degree are essential. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and common development tools is typically required. Strong communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating effectively and staying productive in a remote environment. These skills and qualities enable graduates to successfully contribute to distributed teams, solve complex problems, and adapt to the dynamic demands of remote tech roles.

How do remote computer science graduates typically collaborate with team members and stay engaged while working from home?

Remote computer science graduates often use a range of digital tools like Slack, Zoom, and GitHub to stay connected with their teams, participate in code reviews, and attend virtual meetings. Regular check-ins and agile stand-ups help maintain communication and ensure everyone is aligned on project goals. Many companies also encourage open channels for questions and knowledge sharing, which helps new graduates feel supported and integrated. Staying proactive in communication and seeking mentorship opportunities can further enhance engagement and career growth when working remotely.

What is the difference between Remote Computer Science Graduate vs Remote Software Developer?

AspectRemote Computer Science GraduateRemote Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related fieldProven coding skills, often with a degree or equivalent experience
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, project-based, often internships or apprenticeshipsFull-time, collaborative coding environment, often with team tools
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, research labsSoftware firms, tech companies, SaaS providers
Search & Comparison IntentEntry-level roles, internships, career startersDevelopment roles, coding projects, software engineering

The main difference is that a Remote Computer Science Graduate is typically an entry-level candidate with a degree seeking initial roles, while a Remote Software Developer is a more experienced professional actively coding and developing software. Both roles often overlap in skills and work environment, but the Software Developer role usually requires proven coding experience beyond the degree.

Job description

About the team:

Tapestry is Alphabet's moonshot for the electric grid, working at the frontier where energy's complexity meets AI's potential. We were born at X, the innovation lab responsible for breakthrough technologies like Waymo, Verily and Google Brain.

To keep pace with humanity's growing energy needs, the world needs a grid that is visible and understandable. We provide that clarity by building advanced AI-enabled analytical and planning tools that allow the entire energy ecosystem to plan smarter, move faster, and operate more efficiently-ensuring electricity remains reliable and affordable for everyone.

This is a global effort. Tapestry is proud to support partners in the U.S., U.K., Chile, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil as they build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

Joining Tapestry allows you to do the best work of your life as part of a multidisciplinary team of experts in AI, energy systems, software engineering and product design-all collaborating to reshape energy on a global scale. If you want to tackle problems that matter and build tools with real impact, we would love to meet you. Learn more about our team and our mission here.

About the role

We are seeking a talented grid simulations and computational specialist to join Tapestry and help expand our high-performance grid computation capabilities. In this role, you will bridge power system physics with modern software architecture, designing simulation algorithms and optimization tools capable of handling complex, large-scale electrical networks.

You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of AI researchers, software engineers, power systems domain experts, and product managers to turn complex technical challenges into production-ready solutions. By building advanced computational capabilities, you will empower global energy partners to accelerate the transition to clean energy, improve grid reliability, and unlock transformative 10x impact across the global energy ecosystem.

How you'll make 10x impact:

In this role you will...

  • Work with power system and software engineering experts on the design and creation of advanced simulation and optimization tools.
  • Develop codes and algorithms to take full advantage of powerful, modern computer hardware.

What you should have:

  • Master or PhD in Electrical Engineering.
  • Solid expertise and a deep understanding of core power systems and power electronics principles.
  • 6+ years of experience in power systems or power electronics modeling and simulations.
  • Experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Python, Java, or C/C++.
  • Understanding of numerical methods, including solving nonlinear/linear differential equations, differentiation and integration, and time discretization.

It'd be great if you had these:

  • Experience conducting power system planning and interconnection studies.
  • Are a skilled and efficient programmer in scientific programming languages (e.g, JAX, C++, Julia, etc.) with a desire to expand into new areas of coding languages and processes.
  • Familiar with Machine Learning concepts.

Our values

  • Take charge: We take initiative and own outcomes that move the mission forward.
  • Transform with purpose: We build solutions that solve real problems and create meaningful impact.
  • Be a Tapestry, not a thread: We collaborate across diverse skills and perspectives to achieve more than we can individually.
  • Always fine-tune: We stay curious, seek feedback, and refine our understanding as we learn.
  • Stay grounded: We listen openly, value different perspectives, and stay focused on what matters most.

What we offer

A culture that supports growth, ownership, and meaningful impact, along with:

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous PTO and flexible hybrid work model
  • 401(k) with employer contribution
  • Professional development
  • The ability to work on important real-world problems within an Alphabet-backed environment
