Job description

About us:
Axiomatic AI is building a new class of AI systems designed to reason with the rigor of the scientific method. By combining deep learning with formal logic and physics-based modeling, we create verifiable, interpretable AI systems that collaborate with and support human researchers in high-stakes scientific and engineering workflows.
Our mission, 30ร—30, is to deliver a 30ร— improvement in the speed, accessibility, and cost of semiconductor and photonic hardware development by 2030.
We aim to revolutionize hardware design and simulation in these industries and are building a team of highly motivated professionals to bring these innovations from research into commercial products.
Position overview:
As an AI Research Scientist focused on photonic and neuromorphic computing, you will play a key role in designing AI algorithms and architectures, as well as simulation and optimization frameworks for emerging, non-traditional computing platforms. You will contribute to the development of algorithms, digital twins, and training methods that bridge AI, physics, and hardware-aware system design integrated within Axiomatic's next-generation agentic-AI-aware computational science tools.
This role is part of Axiomatic's long-term research and product roadmap and spans multiple projects and initiatives, working closely with AI researchers, physicists, and software engineers to translate advanced concepts into scalable, high-impact solutions.
Your mission
  • Simulation and digital twins: Develop simulation and digital-twin tools that capture physical effects such as nonlinearities, noise, and precision limits, enabling hardware-aware algorithm development.
  • Co-design and collaboration: Work closely with internal AI, software, and hardware teams to ensure tight alignment between algorithms, system constraints, and long-term platform goals such as automation of scientific workflows.
  • Algorithm and system design: Design and prototype machine-learning architectures and physics-aware optimization workflows for neuromorphic systems, exploring how AI models can be efficiently mapped onto emerging hardware substrates.
  • Research, benchmarking, and reporting: Evaluate system-level performance tradeoffs, conduct benchmarking studies, document results, and contribute to technical decision-making across Axiomatic's R&D portfolio.
Key requirements
  • PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong background in machine learning and neural-network architectures, with experience or strong interest in hardware-algorithm co-design, neuromorphic systems, or analog/unconventional computing.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Python and modern ML frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of scientific computing, modeling, and data-driven experimentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced research environment.
Nice to have
  • Background in photonic, analog, or non-CMOS computing systems.
  • Experience with spiking neural networks, energy-efficient AI, or hardware-aware ML.
  • Familiarity with physical simulation tools or custom modeling pipelines.
