What is a remote computer programmer?

A remote computer programmer is a professional who writes, tests, and maintains computer code while working from a location outside of a traditional office, such as from home or another remote location. They use programming languages to create software, applications, and systems, collaborating with teams through online communication and project management tools. Remote computer programmers often enjoy flexible schedules and can work for companies located anywhere in the world, provided they have reliable internet access and the necessary technical setup.

What does a remote computer programmer do?

As a remote computer programmer, you work from home as a software developer and help create the programs, applications, and assets required by your employer. In this role, you may engineer solutions to existing software problems, code new applications, monitor a system or a network, and ensure the security of all online components. Remote computer programmers frequently work on smaller, short-term projects, but occasionally code larger and more complex content. Many aspects of this job vary by employer and could include switching between a variety of programming languages, using additional hardware, and writing technical documentation like user manuals or training material.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer programmer?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and familiarity with development frameworks or agile project management tools is often expected. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication are standout soft skills for remote collaboration. These skills ensure the ability to deliver high-quality code efficiently, maintain alignment with distributed teams, and adapt to evolving technical requirements.

How do remote computer programmers typically collaborate and communicate effectively with their teams?

Remote computer programmers often rely on a combination of collaboration tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), project management platforms (like Jira or Trello), and communication tools (Slack, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams) to stay connected with their colleagues. Regular virtual meetings and code reviews are common practices to ensure alignment and maintain code quality. Clear documentation and proactive communication are key, as working remotely can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or delays. Successful remote programmers make an effort to be responsive, participate in team discussions, and stay updated on project changes.

The Opportunity

  • Manage staff engineers owning hiring, performance, growth, retention, leave cover, and the day to day technical direction of their work.
  • Hold the technical bar across the applications the staff engineers support, and arbitrate architecture disagreements between senior technical staff.
  • Manage the offshore relationship through the Offshore Engineering Manager, which covers the AVPL India delivery team, its vendor relationship, and vendor performance & quality.
  • Lead a blended onshore and offshore organization as a single engineering capability.
  • Design and develop the platform engineer team.
  • Manage platform engineers owning hiring, performance, growth, retention, leave cover, and the day to day technical direction of their work.
  • Determine which platforms survive and what is retired; consolidate overlapping internal tools to one or two platforms; absorb VIA work.
  • Build and establish the shared tools, standards, controls, governance, shared capabilities, security model and observability that other teams build on without needing engineering's direct involvement.
  • Manage team ownership of production AI systems: oversee the team design and delivery of the retrieval pipelines, model orchestration, evaluation harnesses and data infrastructure that carry live patient, claims and operational data; enforce evaluation and monitoring as a required part of the definition of done, including accuracy, hallucination and safety testing, drift detection, human in the loop review, and clinically meaningful quality metrics.
  • Oversee model sourcing: build verses buy across foundation models, hosted interfaces, open weight models anything trained in house, with a clear eye view of cost, latency, privacy and vendor risk.
  • Judge against throughput and quality change from agentic workflows, and support team development of the platform underneath them: orchestration, context management, permissions, observability.
  • Manage team development in and of agent-augmented development lifecycle as a platform capability: agentic coding, automated test generation, code review, migration, refactoring, documentation and incident triage, with the provenance, review gates, security scanning and the intellectual property and compliance controls a healthcare environment requires.
  • Instill team accountability for correctness, safety and security within the engineering organization; it is never delegated to AI/Models.
  • Ensure products are developed correctly in a regulated environment, including HIPAA, protected health information handling, auditability, access controls and applicable clinical and payer requirements.
  • Implement governance as guardrails within the system, with policy as code, permissions and audit built into the platform and observability enabled by default.
  • Partner with Revenue Cycle, Information Security, IT Architecture and Application Operations.
  • Represent Engineering to Clinical and Executive Leadership.

Required Experience and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline required.
  • 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years leading engineering leaders, with responsibility for organization level delivery and technical strategy required.
  • Experience as a direct line manager of senior and staff level engineers required.
  • Experience building a platform or internal developer capability and growing it on evidence rather than on demand required.
  • Experience consolidating overlapping internal tools required.
  • Direct experience applying AI agentic harnesses/frameworks within the software development process, with a defensible view on scaling that responsibly required.
  • Current ongoing expertise in modern AI engineering, including large language models and agentic systems, retrieval, evaluation and observability, and the supporting data infrastructure required.
  • Experience running a blended onshore and offshore organization, including a vendor relationship at scale required.
  • Experience delivering software in a regulated or high trust domain required.
  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, or related discipline preferred.
  • Healthcare, revenue cycle management, or clinical systems background strongly preferred, adjacent regulated industries considered preferred.

  • Experience implementing governance as guardrails rather than review boards preferred.
  • Experience defining and implementing platform scope preferred.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA, protected health information handling, auditability, access controls, and applicable clinical and payer requirements.
  • Hands-on technical depth in Engineering, Architecture, Security background vs. Business expertise only.
  • Technical leadership and architectural judgement at organizational scale.
  • Ability to build and defend team size, team shape, and platform investment.

  • Ability to decline scope that belongs elsewhere.
  • Skilled at leadership, conflict resolution, and team building.
