What is a remote computer programmer?

A remote computer programmer is a professional who writes, tests, and maintains computer code while working from a location outside of a traditional office, such as from home or another remote location. They use programming languages to create software, applications, and systems, collaborating with teams through online communication and project management tools. Remote computer programmers often enjoy flexible schedules and can work for companies located anywhere in the world, provided they have reliable internet access and the necessary technical setup.

What does a remote computer programmer do?

As a remote computer programmer, you work from home as a software developer and help create the programs, applications, and assets required by your employer. In this role, you may engineer solutions to existing software problems, code new applications, monitor a system or a network, and ensure the security of all online components. Remote computer programmers frequently work on smaller, short-term projects, but occasionally code larger and more complex content. Many aspects of this job vary by employer and could include switching between a variety of programming languages, using additional hardware, and writing technical documentation like user manuals or training material.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer programmer?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and familiarity with development frameworks or agile project management tools is often expected. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication are standout soft skills for remote collaboration. These skills ensure the ability to deliver high-quality code efficiently, maintain alignment with distributed teams, and adapt to evolving technical requirements.

How do remote computer programmers typically collaborate and communicate effectively with their teams?

Remote computer programmers often rely on a combination of collaboration tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), project management platforms (like Jira or Trello), and communication tools (Slack, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams) to stay connected with their colleagues. Regular virtual meetings and code reviews are common practices to ensure alignment and maintain code quality. Clear documentation and proactive communication are key, as working remotely can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or delays. Successful remote programmers make an effort to be responsive, participate in team discussions, and stay updated on project changes.

Job description

We are currently looking for a Software Product Engineer for a 100% remote position on a large federal government project. This role will lead the design and development of complex systems that automate complex workflows, support data-driven decision-making, and enhance healthcare technology platforms. The ideal candidate would be a highly experienced engineer with deep expertise in designing scalable cloud-based architectures and building production-grade AI applied solutions. This role will collaborate closely with engineering teams, product stakeholders, and technical leadership to translate complex concepts into secure, reliable, and scalable solutions.
The candidate must reside within the continental US.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build event-driven, data-intensive backend services in Node.js / TypeScript, using cloud native solutions such Amazon Aurora (PostgreSQL), ECS and SQS to support AI workloads at scale.
  • Decompose complex healthcare and AI workflows into a microservices architecture - defining clear service boundaries and data ownership, designing inter-service communication across synchronous REST and asynchronous messaging (SQS/event-driven) patterns, and delivering independently deployable, loosely coupled services that scale and fail independently.
  • Drive a test-driven development (TDD) practice across the team - writing tests before implementation, maintaining strong coverage across unit, integration, and contract tests, and using the test suite to guide design, prevent regressions, and ensure the reliability of AI-enabled services in a regulated environment.
  • Develop AI pipelines that process structured and unstructured data to support intelligent decision systems.
  • Design and implement scalable AI-enabled systems and services that support mission-critical healthcare platforms.
  • Design cloud-native architectures and distributed systems that support AI-driven applications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements and research concepts into deployable solutions.
  • Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and deploying AI-enabled systems in production environments.
  • Strong hands-on engineering experience with React and Node.js /TypeScript, building production-grade services, REST APIs, and integrations.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, or Claude Code, with a proven ability to leverage these tools to accelerate development, improve productivity, and enhance code quality.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS data and messaging services, to build event-driven, data-intensive services that support AI workloads.
Experience designing and developing microservices, REST APIs, and distributed systems supporting AI workloads.
  • Demonstrated practice of test-driven development (TDD) and automated testing (unit, integration, and contract tests) to ensure reliability and maintainability of production services.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployments, and DevOps practices for scalable AI systems.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and experience troubleshooting complex distributed systems.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to guide technical discussions and influence engineering decisions.
Additional Qualifications
  • Experience building AI solutions within regulated environments such as healthcare or federal government systems.
  • Familiarity with FHIR, HL7, or healthcare interoperability standards.
  • Experience with AI orchestration frameworks, agent-based architecture, or intelligent automation systems.
  • Experience with relational data modeling and performance tuning on PostgreSQL / Amazon Aurora.
  • Experience building asynchronous, message-driven workflows using Amazon SQS and object storage with Amazon S3.
  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.
Benefits Security Clearance Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • All selected candidates must successfully complete background check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government/ public Trust clearance, including required fingerprinting, when required for the position.
Benefits
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance.
  • 401(k) with Employer Match.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) plus Federal Holidays.
  • Corporate Laptop.
  • Training and Professional Development Opportunities.
  • 100% Remote Opportunity.

Note: Selected candidates will be required to complete fingerprinting at a government facility and undergo a background check as part of the hiring process.
