Why this job matters:
Provides technical leadership and architectural direction across multiple domains. Shapes strategy, aligns product roadmaps, and ensures architectural integrity across the portfolios/domains. Accountable for end-to-end technical solution architecture delivery, driving efficiency throughout the project lifecycle and establishing clear technical direction for all Technical Software Architects. Collaborates closely with engineering and enterprise architecture to maintain credibility and deliver scalable solutions aligned with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and operational standards. Mentors junior architects, drives solution design, upholds architectural principles, and supports both business and technical needs across all phases of the project lifecycle design.
What you will do:
  • Own solution designs for high complexity domains, mentoring junior TSAs.
  • Produce and maintain architecture artifacts (HLDs, current v target state, context diagrams, sequence diagrams, etc.)
  • Evaluate design trade-offs (latency vs. throughput, synchronous vs. async calls).
  • Govern critical cross-cutting concerns: identity, data platform, API platform, observability, and security.
  • Make high-stakes decisions on build/buy via product evaluations, contributing to reference implementations and proof-of-concepts (POCs).
  • Govern design reviews; capture and track technical risks, assumptions, and decisions.
  • Identify and validate non-functional requirements (NFR).
  • Establish and enforce enterprise standards (identity, logging, API standards, cloud patterns).
  • Drive projects with evolving technical artifacts to continuously maintain the current-state ecosystem with EA oversight.
  • Curate and share internal knowledge base of capabilities, systems, processes, interdependencies, and underlying design via the EA tool.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Develop architect community of practice; mentor and succession-plan for the function.
  • Establish and evolve architecture principles, standards, best practices, and enforce through Architecture Review Board and projects.
  • Own HLD and other solution/technical artifact template maintenance.
  • Ensure alignment between enterprise, solution, and technical architecture layers.
  • Ensure scalability, performance, and resilience of critical systems.
  • Drive technology innovation and adoption

What you need to succeed:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Seven or more years' experience in software engineering with five or more years of repeated success guiding large-scale, multi-year transformations via architecture design and support.
  • Broad experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) with AI/ML enablement.
  • Expert in API management, microservices, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Experience with Salesforce, FACETS, ServiceNow, Matillion, Apigee, Snowflake, and data warehousing tools/practices.
  • Experience with data architecture, analytics platforms, and data governance.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to engineering with good diagramming hygiene for mutual understanding.
  • Receptive/adaptive to alternative design approaches presented by engineering, although accountable for the final design.
  • Experience with best practice software development, integration, and configuration management methodologies and project management office reporting.
  • Coachable, adaptable, and willing to learn/teach modern technologies/processes.
  • Proven track record of leading large-scale digital transformation initiatives.
  • Strong business acumen with ability to align technology strategy to business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for inter-level audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and drive consensus.
  • Expert in agile or waterfall methodologies.

Location:
BCBSRI is headquartered in downtown Providence, conveniently located near the train station and bus terminal. We actively support associate well-being and work/life balance and offer the following schedules, based on role:
  • In-office: onsite 5 days per week
  • Hybrid: onsite 2-4 days per week
