Job description

Job Summary

The Product Owner works closely with their software development team and business stakeholders to support the planning, prioritization, and execution of software development projects. The Product Owner is responsible for maintaining product backlogs, gathering requirements, and ensuring alignment with business objectives. This role emphasizes learning and growth, enabling the PO to develop a strong understanding of product development processes, team dynamics, and the impact of their software domain on the broader business.

This specific Product Owner role will work directly with our tax systems owning the products used to calculate and apply sales tax, issue exemptions, and more across multiple environments. They will specifically work with Vertex O Series and our internal systems integrated with Vertex. Because of this, the ideal candidate must have significant hands on experience working with the On-Premises version of Vertex O Series and have previous product owner experience working with stakeholders and developers.

Responsibilities
  • Own and maintain the Tax system backlog in Azure DevOps (ADO), developing a foundational understanding of all active work items.
  • Interpret stakeholder and organizational needs, translating them into concise work items for the development team (bugs, PBIs, features, and research spikes).
  • Support, troubleshoot, and maintain the Vertex O Series indirect tax platform to ensure accurate tax calculation across our e-commerce, marketplace, and point-of-sale environments.
  • Optimize Vertex integrations with our ERP systems, APIs, and other internal applications to improve tax automation and compliance.
  • Understands and can explain the ‘what’ and ‘why’ behind work items to participate in refinement and sizing during team discussions.
  • Actively takes steps to improve product knowledge by tracking legislation changes and ensuring the roadmap reflects rate/rule/compliance changes to support stakeholders and the business.
  • Develop a strong working relationship with technical-BA and dev team to close any gaps on the technical side.
  • Collaborate with team members to prioritize and organize the backlog for transparency and timely completion of valuable work items.
  • Support the development of a product roadmap by contributing to priority-setting and vision discussions.
  • Testing completed items to ensure quality and compliance with Acceptance Criteria and assist in coordinating smooth releases with stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for stakeholders running roadmap meetings, demos, release communications, answering questions, and troubleshooting bugs.
  • Attend daily and weekly development meetings, adhering to the team’s working agreement and contributing constructively.
Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed while sitting/standing and interfacing with a personal computer.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Requires the regular use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • Requires occasional bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights, up to 50lbs.
Remote Work Qualifications
  • Access to a reliable and secure high-speed internet connection. Cable or fiber internet connections (at least 75mbps download/10mbps upload) are preferred, as satellite connections often cannot support the technologies used to perform day-to-day tasks.
  • Access to a home router and modem.
  • A dedicated home office space that is noise- and distraction-free. The space should have strong wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection (wired connection is preferred, if possible).
  • A valid, physical address (apartment, suite, etc.). PO Boxes are not supported, as a physical address is required for you to receive your computer equipment.
  • The desire and ability to work and communicate with other team members via chat, webcam, etc.
  • Legal residents of one of the following states: (AK, AL, AR, AZ, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NV, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV, or WY). H-1B Visa Sponsorship Not Available, W2 only.
Experience
  • Product Owner or Product Manager experience, ideally in tax, compliance, or finance.
  • Domain knowledge of indirect tax and/or exemption/resale certificate management.
  • Experience working with agile methodologies, software development processes, or project management preferred.
  • Experience with Vertex O Series (On-Premises)
