Job description

First Merchants Bank is seeking a SBA Business Development Officer I to join our team! This position can be remote within our operational footprint. This position is a development program for recent college graduates to develop communication, financial analysis and pipeline generation skills in preparation for promotion to a full Business Development role upon completion. As part of this program, participants will assist current senior BDO’s with file management, work with customers to obtain documentation, provide assistance with financial analysis, complete assignments and assume responsibilities of various tasks; including the delivery of a superior customer experience, Participants will complete the NAGGL SBA Lender training course, and will complete mentoring and coaching tasks, while learning all bank of policies and procedures.

As part of this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with immediate supervisor and/or training mentor to complete assigned curriculum and a Career Growth Planner (CGP).
  • Lead and/or participate in various projects.
  • Complete each phase of the program, a skills assessment, and demonstrate knowledge of competency in discussion with a SBA Business Development Director.
  • Participate in trainee development meetings and/or conferences; lead designated discussion groups.
  •  Serve in place of absent BDO’s as needed.
  • Travel to banking centers, regional operations sites, and additional meeting locations.
  • Collaborate with SBA Business Development Director to promote the bank through community involvement and leverage contacts to create a pipeline of new business opportunities.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with external referral sources to maintain a consistent pipeline of high-quality new SBA loan transactions.
  • Work with prospective borrowers to collect required documents; organize and save documents per team protocols ensuring proper security measures of any sensitive or personally identifiable information.
  • Work with borrowers to address any character issues by obtaining written explanations and any additional documentation required by the SOP.
  • Participate in initial “kick-off” call with borrower and Underwriter for each loan.
  • Assist Underwriters and Closers, as necessary, to gather required documentation and ensure borrower cooperation.
